BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Havent seen much about it here on BP.

In Brazil BMW have anounced some new BIFuel engines for 2014.

These use both Petrol and/or Ethanol.

This tecnology is exclusive for Brazil.

"The first turbo car premium flex ® was presented by BMW during the laying of the cornerstone of its first auto plant in Latin America, Araquari in northern Santa Catarina . The BMW 320i ActiveFlex , which is available in dealerships of the brand since November, from R $ 129,950 , was officially launched during the event . The model is also being offered in versions 320i and 320i Sport ActiveFlex GP GP ActiveFlex , respectively , for R $ 143,950 and R $ 154,950 .

Especially developed for the Brazilian market , the 320i sedan ActiveFlex brings under the hood engine 2.0 four-cylinder with turbocharger and direct fuel injection . The engine uses BMW TwinPower Turbo technology that allows you to control the preparation of the mixture of fuel ( alcohol or gasoline) , ensuring high performance . Working together with the eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive , the engine takes the 320i 0-100 km / h in 7.3 seconds and maximum of 235 km / h - the same performance as gasoline model ."

Seems like it has already been remapped by some local tuners.

Not sure why someone would want to spend $75k on a 320i and then trying to save money by using crap ethanol.

Because ethanol is way cheaper in Brazil than gasoline.

I just bought one, I will pick it up next week.

Is there a problem for the engine using ethanol?

I like that it can use ethanol, because it cost 1,8$RS and normal Benzin 2.8$RS.
I know it will get a little less miles on ethanol, but the price more than compensates I believe.

Last time I was in Brazil I loaded her up with ethanol and the mpg was so much less than gas, not sure I saved a whole lot more than a couple bucks. With horrible performance to boot. A lot of people are still choosing gas over ethanol in Brazil because of that. And you're driving a 150,000 reals car for god's sake, what do you care about the price of gas, lol.

Picked it up today, and I'm very pleased with it.
I only jammed the breaks once, because I'm used to have a clutch in that place for manual gear.

The 3er Active Flex is for the Brazillian market only.

The 3er Active flex will also be manufactured in Brazil from 2016 along with the next generation BMW X1 / MINI Countryman and BMW 1er at the new manufacturing facility which recently broke ground in Brazil.

Ethanol is cheaper but you get drastically reduced fuel economy with it which eliminates any potential savings associated with it.

When I had my Flex Fuel truck I only used ethanol for one reason: performance. Ethanol has a very high octane rating and you can run additional timing with it and make more power. Most bi-fuel vehicles will have multiple timing tables available in the factory tune and which it uses will depend on how much ethanol is in the fuel. After I had my truck tuned it pulled much harder with E85 than it did on 93.

When I had my STI tuned to E100, the result was great, but I'd only use E100. The problem in Brazil is the fact that Premium (91) and Podium by Petrobras (premium/95 octane) is RARELY available. All these turbo cars (most of them) require and really take advantage or GOOD/PREMIUM GAS. Brazil only has 87 (if that because I doubt all are) available at all stations and E100 AT EVERY SINGLE STATION. E100 all the way!
