Rust staining from wheel caps

has anyone else suffering from rust stains coming from the centre wheel cap ?, noticed that a couple of my wheels had brown stains on the alloy, easily washed off but wondered where it was coming from - then I noticed it was from the centre wheel caps...

Is this a common thing ??

I have just noticed the same this morning. It washes off easily but not a particularly impressive look on the alloys. Any ideas?

So is this normal? and why would it disappear, surely it may get worse as whatever is rusting will rust more !

It is coming from the wheel/bearing hubs, gets all wet inside and rusts as the hub is steel and not protected. Been a couple of threads on this subject with F30 cars, with pictures. Not new to BMW with F30/1 models, but seems due to the wet weather more users are noticing it.

Only stops if we have dry weather, but looks quite a mess if you take the wheel(s) off.

A benefit of using winter wheels is that changing wheels twice a year lets you clean up the hubs twice a year when changing over.

Got a good coat of 'protective' rust in the hub centres by now.

this is an easy fix. I removed my wheels and cleaned the inside up of all rust. Next I hit the rust on the hubs with a wire brush. I then taped off the rotors and hit the hub area with some rustoleum black spray paint. I then spread a very thin layer of anti seize on the inner part of the wheel at the hub area. Problem solved. Been that way for 2 months now with no issues at all. No rust and tons of washes and rain. I also do not have to see that ugly rust when I look at my wheels through the spoke area.
