NYIAS 2013: BMW 328d, 3 Series GT and Concept Active Tourer Make North American Debut

Headlining today's press day at the 2013 New York International Auto Show and making their North American debuts are the BMW 328d, 3 Series GT and Concept Active Tourer.

The 328d (info) and a 320i (info) will join the 335i and 328i this summer in the F30 3 Series lineup. The 328d will be powered by a TwinPower Turbo 4 cylinder engine, outputting 180 hp / 280 lb-ft of torque and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.2 seconds, while getting mileage that could exceed 40 mpg (official US EPA estimates will be available closer to the launch of the 328d).

The 328d will soon be joined by a 535d in the U.S. (see more info).

The FWD plug-in hybrid Concept Active (info) Tourer makes its first appearance at a North American auto show so that BMW can gauge whether to bring the upcoming production model (BMW 1 Series GT) to this market.

so... other than the badge and spec issues, is tehre anything different between the 328d and a 320d? i thought BMW got over this "durr lets make the model numbers big so people spend more money durr" issue

That 328d looks tempting... and for the love of god, please stop shopping at Autozone, BMW!!! Those ridiculous side-vents (whether it's on the upcoming 4 series or this 3GT) look terrible...

The headlights on the GT are what the regular 3-Series/4-Series need to look like. It looks so much better.

Really? if you're all about function, get yourself a caterham.

Car makers don't have to sacrifice aesthetics for functionality... Or, in the ISF's case, they did it the other way around... Sacrificing functionality for aesthetics... ahem, fake exhaust tips...

disappointing. i bet that 328d has a 3k premium over the 328i. tack on xdrive for another 2k, and another 2k for sports package, another 1k for xenons, another 1k for heated seats, another 1k for a freakin sunroof. and you might as well just get the 335i

they should bring 330d not 328 (or is it 320 in Europe?)... IMO, pple in US will buy diesel for torque/power (like in 330) or for economy, like Jetta TDI. Doubt many pple looking to save money on fuel will buy 328d over VW TDI models...

p.s. I am happy though that diesel options are available and look forward for more from other brands.

These vents are actually functional.

Why do people complain these are Auto Zone parts? They are functional. Just because some ricer idiots put fake crap from Auto Zone on their cars doesn't mean BMW needs to keep functional versions of these items off theirs.

Hmm

I have a 335d and wouldn't switch to a 328d because of the lack of power.

Maybe when the M550d's get here...381HP/546ft lbs.

You're confusing what a lot of people are complaining about. They're not arguing whether the vents are functional or not. All they're saying, is that the vents look ugly and cheap, like an autozone stick on side grille.
