Ordered an F31, but what about this "allocation"?

Today I ordered an 2013 wagon (F31) and provided the salesman with my credit card number for the deposit. He said that he "didn't have an allotment" for this car yet and would work on it, so he couldn't promise exactly when it would arrive, etc. That's fine. I love my old 2000 323it wagon and am not in a hurry to part with it, but I am wondering if his not having an allotment for the car could pose a problem. How would he resolve this?

he can trade allocation from other dealers but I doubt he will be successful since it's a hot new model.

There are many educational posts on this forum talking about allocations.
It's something BMW assigns to the dealerships for each model every month(sometimes there will be extra allocations) and the dealerships will have to have an allocation for your model to be able to officially order the vehicle with bmw.

I'd say shop around, find a dealer that actually has an allocation.

Oh, by the way, if someone claims he/she has allocation, he should be able to give you a Production Number or it's fake.

Okay, so it sounds like my salesman may or may not be able to trade an allocation for me. But wouldn't he get a new allocation at the beginning of the next month and then be in a better position to process my order?

well, he may or may not get the allocation for the model you want.
It's based on the overall sales performance of the dealership and the market demand for the model. There are so many dealerships in the country but BMW can only produce limited amount of vehicles within a fixed timeframe. Some dealers may not get the allocation they wanted for a couple of months.

I'm on a similar position as you, waiting for my dealer to get an allocation to process my F31 order. Sucks having to wait, but not much you can do other than find a dealer who has an open allocation.
