How did you guys do the break in period? - BMW 3-Series Forum (F30 / F32)

Just wondering what is the best way to do the break in period? I did mostly highway is that ok?

There are numerous posts on this subject in the break in section. I had one as well. Highway is not a good way to break in. You need to vary your speeds and RPMs.

The break-in period comes down to the piston rings and how well they settle within the cylinders. To get a good fit, the rule of thumb goes something like:

Avoid full-throttle starts and rapid acceleration
Avoid engine speed to exceed 4000 rpm
Avoid hard braking for first 300 km (200 miles)
Avoid driving at constant engine or vehicle speed for extended time
Avoid towing anything
Follow manufacturer's recommended oil change interval

If you're not a rule of thumb kind of person, check out this site for something different:

i just drove it on the highway to work. i don't think it is really a big deal. people do certain thing to ease their mind though. haven't seen any issues, no oil leaks.

ive been driving as i would normally drive it... mostly babying but floored it a few times on highway entry ramps in sport+D/S (and boy does she have pick up!) On one occasion she held the rpms all the way to 6K before I shifted up. but otherwise nothing crazy.

I honestly don't know why you guys make such a big fuss about breaking it in, chances are you will never see the effects of a slow break in because you will sell the car well before the rings and heads start giving in. And if they do prematurely, it will be due to constant and rapid temperature changes i.e not letting the engine get warm before flooring it all the way to work everyday.

I drove it like a madman, right from day 1! Just make sure its nice an warm before you push it.

Just my 2 cents

First 200 miles of sedate driving then full throttle whenever you need/want. Whether this is the best way I've no idea - it's what I chose to do.

When i was a Toyota Dealer I broke in a new high compression V6 about every 6 weeks. The harder I was on them seemed to break the in better.

I think the manufacturer is recommending the conservative approach because it will break the driver in and allow them to acclimate to the car as much as anything. How can they go wrong by saying "be careful for your first two thousand miles"? That way most people don't hit the streets trying to break the sound barrier in an unfamiliar car.

Imagine if the manual had an aggressive break in suggested. It would be pretty funny.
