Ummm yes. No arguments about the car but the angles make "it" look sad. Nothing said about the capabilities of the vehicle.

I need some advice. I am about to buy/lease my very first BMW. The options I am considering are
1. Lease a brand new 2013 328
2. Buy a Cpo e90 (2011)

Can you guys help me with pros and cons of these options?

Congrats on the new car and I'll echo the others in noting how well you took care of the e46. Steel Blue is a spectacular color and one of the colors that made me take note of the e46. After 12 years and 200k miles, I just wasn't able to let go of mine and decided to keep it and add another car to the stable. Every time I climb back in, I'm reminded of what a great car it is.

Thanks for the cool story and enjoy your new F30!

Start by driving both, keep them optioned similarly so you can accurately compare.

My first BMW was a 2010 328i (6 cylinder engine)-bought it off the dealers lot, it had some nice options: sport auto transmission which in auto mode is just great, much better than the demo I drove without it: Comfort access, variable ratio steering. Had base stereo.
Love the car except: Base stereo is terrible, would cost several thousand to replace. Don't get a e90 unless it has the Harmon Karden upgrade.
Also, suspension is stiff and this generation run flats are harsh/noisy: car handles great but is not that comfortable. Thought the interior was cheap feeling for what the car sells for.
I have ordered a new AH3 with the 6 cylinder engine as I just did not like the 4 cylinder in the new 328i. Also ordered the Active suspension and variable ratio steering, which allows the car to be more compliant on rough roads. One demo I drove had this, the other did not: I felt with it in sport mode it drove very much like the e90 while in comfort mode softened up the rough roads, without it it was a bit soft in the turns and steering not as firm, at the same time still a bit harsh on rough roads. And added the HK stereo.
My advise would be to get a F30 because you can either find one with the options you want or order one set up just as you want. I know my e90 was a good start but I'm really looking forward to the new car.

As a follow up, I'd also advise to lease your first BMW as that way you can really decide what you want and set up the perfect car 3 years from now.
Also get the $1,000 tire and rim insurance: after 2 years my tires had become so noisy I really stopped liking the car-service rep said that is the nature of the run flats, we replaced the fronts for about $750 which made the car drive like new again: he said on the next car get the insurance and he can replace all 4 halfway through the lease, so that there will still be enough tread on them at the end of the lease. If you don't do this you are going to pay them at least $750 at the end of the lease for new fronts an maybe double that for all 4.

Same here.. First car I ever ordered was a '99 E46 328i, also as soon as I graduated college (2 months before actually, little graduation gift to myself). I've ordered several cars since, but don't think I anticipated any as much as my F30 335xi... And my list of ordered cars includes an X5 E70 4.8i that had an obscene amount of options and an Audi S5. Somehow though, my two 3's were the ones I really couldn't wait for, but did..

In fact, having a 3 again brings back such good memories, I just ordered a couple of these, just like the one I had with my E46 (and still have, but it's peeling):

Cool post. I kinda posted a similar story when I first joined the forum. I bought my 02 E46 325i new off the lot. 10 years later, I traded it for my current ride.

FWIW, once I got past the electric steering, i barely miss my my old one. Extra ponies and torque don't hurt and the new one definitely puts a smile on my face every day.

That was one of the best colors BMW ever had. It was a like a blue-ish grey color.

Awesome story. I love E46s. Every time I see one in good condition on the road, I always wish I had one over my e90. I can tell you took very good condition of your old car. It really does look like it's in new condition on the outside. To me, stories like that are what the brand is all about. And I think a lot of companies (toyota, subaru) are trying to recreate that "legacy" with their recent commercials. Not that they don't have their own loyal following. But it's that passion all of us BMW owners share that makes these cars so awesome. Congrats on the new f30.

Totally agree - called Steel Blue here in the states

It was a gorgeous color - really unique - you just don't see cars driving around today that look like that. Now it's just 50 shades of grey (pun intended)

I would have bought the new one in that color in a second if it was an option

Here is my version of the picture & similar story.
I picked up my F30 last May but only recently parted with the E46.

The F3x is lacking something for me that I can't put a finger on yet. Certainly from what I've read so far the steering is nowhere near as crisp and communicative as on the E46. As far as I am concerned the ZHP is the best non-M 3 series ever built.
I know what you mean. While I love our 2013 335 M Sport tremendously, there is a lack of communication with the road in comparison to our 2001 E46. In most ways I feel that the F30 is an improvement, but does not have the driver connection to the road of the E46. If we had the room, I would buy our 330ci back again as a third car. Not sure if that the person that we sold it to would want to sell it back to us though. just my 2 cents!

Threads like this convinces me to hang onto my '03 E46 (Orient Blue) which looks so "ooh" especially after I've given her a bath. I get to drive my wife's F30 on the weekends, best of both worlds.
