Wheels magazine review

These are quite old issues, but this is what australia's wheels magazine had to say about the 328i and in particular the standard suspension.

328i vs C250 vs A4 comparison

Note that the aus spec of the C250 has adaptive as standard. Not really an apples to apples comparison IMO.

Well done article. Thanks for posting it.

The picture of the black F30 with the cones is very telling.

Thanks for the post. It has been difficult to find relevant articles. Sounds like the M suspension is a must. Overall though pretty harsh reviews on the standard setup. Not good considering how many people buy stripped models (and are first time buyers) who may not see what has been so special about BMWs.

If I end up going back to a 3er, these articles made the decision on options clearer for me.

Aaptive M Sport Suspension is a must on the F30. I did a back to back comparison yesterday of M Sport Adaptive vs M Sport Passive Suspensions.

Without the Adaptive Suspension, the BMW does not feel communicative or connected with the driver. Without Adaptive Suspension it happens to become a lower grade of car.

We've owned a C Class 350 CDI AMG Sport with Adaptive Suspension before purchasing our two F30 330d M Sports. The BMW is the better driver's car but only when specc'd with Adaptive M Sport Suspension. As far as Engine and Gearbox are concerned, the BMW simply trounces the Mercedes with utter ease. The A4 is an anaodyne drive and not in the league of the BMW or Mercedes IMO.

Shameless plug: The UK Forum is full of interesting comparisons and discussions on Adaptive vs Passive Suspensions, on VSS vs SS, on DAB vs FM!

See below for Adaptive vs Passive:

Interesting. I test drove and took delivery of a 328i with standard suspension, and I can't say I'm disappointed with it. Certainly haven't felt it bottom out or wallow like shown in the photo. LOL Although I'm sure with heavy braking you could make it do that.

I had asked to test drive a standard car, and when I took delivery I was a little alarmed because the salesman seemed confused. He told me the suspension would become firmer in sport mode when I knew it didn't have adaptive. Had I test driven one with adaptive or not? But fortunately it felt exactly like the one I test drove. I can just picture a confused salesman giving someone a test drive with adaptive and setting them up for a huge disappointment when they receive standard.

Totally agree with them on the steering. Something between sport and comfort would be ideal. Sport is just a little too heavy to make me comfortable on narrow curvy roads where you need to make lots of quick, small corrections.
