I was about to pick up a F30 335 for my gf who had really liked them but I absolutely hate how bmw rolls out new models with the same engines and then within 1-2 years offers a brand new engine.

I get the n55 is a great engine but it will be replaced by a better engine and we all know this will happen, not like an unknown, given how every generation has ever worked.

Ultimately it is her car but I driving it as well and to her it won't matter but for my own selfishness I would rather enjoy the newest and best engine.

I wouldn't tune it by the way which could be arguement for the older engine given its more known for tuners.

Anyone else hesitate because of this?

The WORST historically in any car brand history was the poor guys who bought a 2006 e90 330i, first generation and within 7 months found out the 335 was replacing it with an engine with 75 more horsepower!

What about people who bought a car, and then in 5 months a new model rolls out? BMW will roll out it's new models/engines when they can/choose to. No one forces you to buy at a certain time. I'm perfectly happy with my 328 engine.

You have to decide if 300 horses and 300 ft/lb of torque are enough or if you will lose your sh*t if they upgrade the engine for 2014.

I weighed both sides and I still decided to order the 2013 335. But I'm also leasing so I know in 2016, I'll be in another new car.

I second this thought. The N20 engine is VERY good and power delivery is on tap every where. But, since you are obviously not happy with how BMW brings out new engines, how about stepping over to Audi or VW. They have had the 2.0 T for some time now. Enjoy!

Totally different. 328 did get a new engine and seems to perform way better than the old underpowered i6.

Also comparing a 60k car to a new phone is silly. To some degree you can't always wait for the newest thing but when you know that the engine is about to change, how many of you could honestly say you would not be pissed if they roll out the new "N56" with 330hp. Sure if you are a guy that gets a tune you wouldnt care but vast majority dont get a tune.

Not really cos when the E90 first came out the N52 was a brand new engine. It was only in the US when the N54 came out BMWUSA decided not to offer the 330i N52. It wasn't really a replacement cos 335i is a different car compared to the 330i.
The 330i continued to be sold in most other markets until the launch of F30.

You are right about the 330i, I would have been pissed if I had bought that car. It was also underpowered relative to the competition.

Your question is relevant now but these are different times. The N55 is on the wards 10 best, only the S4 offers something comparable otherwise everything else is left in the dust. In addition BMW offers the power pack and that boosts your hp/tq by 10%.

I also have the N55 in my X5, that's why I did not even order the power pack in my 335i. That engine has enough power even in the 5000lb SUV.

BMW in my opinion offered the N54 as a result of the hp war that was started by Infiniti and Lexus back then, they were offering 306 horses at a significant discount to the 330i. Look at those two now after being tamed by the N54/55. They are both offering the same old engines for their 2014 models. IMO they is no pressure to push the hp war on BMWs part.

Given the above, I don't think the situation now is the same as in 2006, you will probably not even get the power pack

Wht do u mean underpowered? None of it's competition at that time have a 3 litre NA which produces 255hp. Audi's 3.2 V6 was the only one competitive with it at that time. The other 3 litres (Merc M272, Toyota GR) all produced around 230hp.
As I said before, the engine in the 330i was brand new & it was first fitted to the E90 in the whole of the BMW range.

Upon reading your post again I am realizing we are in different markets, which is why I love this forum.

infiniti and Lexus both offered 306hp. I bought the G35 which had 306hp, I considered the 330i underpowered back then.

The N54 wasn't a response to either Nissan or Toyota cos a twin-turbo 6 was already reported to be in development way back in 2003.
The Japanese have been focusing on small engines & other stuff such as hybrids & hence their larger engines have not been updated as such. They're now way behind in terms of engine technology when compared with the Europeans.

Exactly, which is why there is no pressure now to change the hp war. BMW successfully changed that to a tq war and they won. Now as you said the focus is on the smaller displacement engines and here in the US BMW is ahead with the launch of the 320i

Plus there is the case for having a proven engine, rather than be a first adopter of a new design, with likely teething issues.

Another point, some of the engine choices and availability are market specific, don't forget BMW are in a world market, not just influenced by BMW NA marketing decisions.

Not correct. The 330i had 255bhp compared to 300 for the N54. Also, it was one of the smoothest BMW inline sixes, and universally praised for that.

I had one of those 330i cars before my N54, let me tell you, it was in no way underpowered. On paper it had lesser power than the G37, but in real world conditions it was faster.

On paper sure, but it was quicker than the jap cars, just like today, even with 328 horses, the G is slower than the N54/55 cars. I have owned all three (N52 330i, N54 335i and now 2012 G37), trust me, it was the most balanced of the three cars IMO

Agreed. The N52 was never underpowered. Period.
