Exclamation F30 HID foglight question

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hey all, I am considering changing my halogen foglights to HID but the question remain is that I know the foglights for the F30 are also used as cornering lights so they fade in/out.. so would that be a issue if I swap it to HID? Would using HID as cornering lights be an issue for overheating or easily burnt out? Thanks!

No issue; HIDs last longer than incandescent halogens. Moreover, the bulbs are not very expensive.

Someone recommend this: H8 GP Thunder 7500K 35W. I expect to buy/install them for next weekend.

I have the white halogen H8s right now, I just want to switch to a HID H8 but I am just afraid that it will easily burnt out/overheat cause it is used as cornering lights

The fog lights are dimmed in and out when used as a turning light. That's quite a stress to the HID ballast. While HIDs do last a long time for continuous operation, they are not designed for momentary operation. They take a few seconds to warm up and stabilize at a color temperature and repeatedly power cycling them is tough on the ballast and the bulb.

It is a bit harder on them, certainly, and not an ideal use. However, having retrofitted HIDs into a couple of Ducatis with projector lenses, and cycling the high beam on-off a great deal without a failure, I would not hesitate to try an HID retrofit as a foglight. The ballasts and bulbs are pretty tough.

Base on that, leaving them on all the time should be fine.

Haha yes!! This is what I am looking for!! Thanks!! You answered my "prayers"! So I guess it is not a good idea to swap the foglights to a HID then? Cause it fades in/out so often as a I make a turn?

If this concerns you, another option is to replace the bulbs with color temperature appropriate LEDs. As I recall someone here did just this.

No there shouldn't be an issue. I have h8 6000ks on. In the beginning they may seem a little blue but once they've been on for a while they'll whiten up. I matched mine to my angel eyes ^^

I'd really recommend switching to LEDs if you find that the halogens aren't your cup of tea (for whatever reason).

Out of curiosity, what is your motivation for swapping out your fogs? High-tech look? Color temperature? Inadequate light output?

I want to go 3000k for my fogs and I know halogen/LED cannot produce that pure raw yellow color without tint. But my concern is that HID will overheat/burnt out because of the constant fade in/out when steering the car.
