Think of it with the C-class in mind. C250 has about 200hp, the C300 slots in about 20% more power, and the C350 is the top of the line at 300hp.

Great move BMW. Now this is aggressive marketing.
Folks: BMW will always make sportier cars to your liking. Just don't buy a 320i if you don't want a 320i.
What BMW needs to do these days is to remain competitive in the global economy, esp. vs Audi and Mercedes who are both planning entry-level products in the US. By pulling the trigger first BMW is going to take customers away from Audi and Merc like crazy, plus cater to a whole new untapped market. Also remember that BMW has to produce truckloads of entry-level cars with good MPGs in order to keep selling powerful sixes.
BMW is just keeping up with the times. It's not like they sent us the 114d or something.

Love this 320i lineup finally making the U.S market.
But looking at the fuel stats, 320i is same as 328i...
so, it's not really a better fuel efficient car, just a cheap entry 3 series, little disappointing

with 320d being most popular version of all european market, they should bring the 320d here to the states

I'm a little disappointed that they would use the m-sport interior appointments, along with suspension if you purchase the sport kit. An unusual step for a true entry level car.

I just can't believe they are giving us this, and not the 320d!!!

Yes, it is an entry level product. I get that. But don't place this where the 328 was, and simply charge more for the 328 and 335 (which is what the pricing has done).

Look at where the 2007 E90 328 MSRP was: $33,175. Look at where the 2014 320 MSRP is. Notice something eerily similar?

You can't tell me that inflation (during the recession) has gotten to the point where there is now a 4k premium over what it used to be.

You would drive BMW out of business. Wagons wont sell in the US and hatchbacks would also have a hard time. Bringing the 320i to the US is a profit driving move.

This will be one of the most common 3-series on the road soon

IA lot changes in 7 years. If they were able to offer the 2013 328 at that pricepoint with a reasonable profit margin they would do so. However, cars have more standard features, stricter safety and emission issues to deal with these days. They are offering the 320i so they can again compete at this price point.

Agreed. the price of the 3-series is higher than ever (perf too, incidentally). What can I say? They placed the 3-series more upmarket than ever. It's a "3.5" now, routinely priced above $50k. This is to make room for the 2-series, I guess.

There is both a 320d (diesel) and a 320i (gasoline) available in other parts of the world. The 320i is what is coming to the US now, and possibly diesel models latter down the road.

Oh I'm sure BMW will NOT make a stripper. Actually BMWNA's website says that the 320i will be available with most packages and options currently available on the rest of the lineup. Hell, that's where the money is! Plus that sport package with 18 inch and M-Sport wheel is not too shabby.

I'm not saying that the 320i is a better car than a 328i (it isn't) or that I would buy a 320i (nope). I'm just saying that it makes perfect economic sense.
