2013 Adaptive M Suspension
With the 2013 changes, it appears you can put the Adaptive M suspension on any line. If you put the Adaptive M suspension on a luxury and sport line and drove them both, does that mean you could have a luxury line feel like a sport or would they still feel different? I've searched for this item on the board, but couldn't find an answer to this question.

I think it depends on how much of a difference performance tires and the lowered suspension make. As far as I can tell, these are the only differences affecting performance between a sport line and a non-sport line. I just ordered a 2013 no-line 335 and I was thrilled to be able to get the adaptive suspension with it. This was the one thing I really wanted from the sport line.

In the UK, we have standard springs across the range, apart from M Sport (although they should be available as a free optional extra). We can then upgrade to a firmer suspension or M Adaptive. So we can have a Luxury out drive a Sport for instance.
The lines here are purely cosmetic, with engine restrictions. Sport Line is a "budget line" so we can't get anything north of a 20d in that guise. Looks like they want to restrict you less in the US like over here.

Does adaptive m suspension actually do anything to make the car more sporty than the standard sportline here in the us?
Or does it just have the option of making a ride more comfortable when you don't want the suspension to be more sporty? |

The M Adaptive package basically adds advanced electronic functionality to your vehicle's handling dynamics + gives you adjustable damping based on your driving mode. Both the Sport suspension or M Adaptive suspension lower your ride height by 10mm vs. stock. ric124 posted a picture of his setup; the wire sticking out goes through to the the M Adaptive unit. (however these are aftermarket springs): ![]()

All F30s have sport/comfort/ecopro driving modes, but it has nothing to do with suspension (adjustments are done for steering, throttle response, shift points, etc.). Adaptive suspension adds adjustable dampers (that's what the wire is for on that picture). Adding Adaptive M suspension to non Sportline should add also Sport+ mode.

F30s without adaptive suspension just have bog standard passive suspension. Pressing the eco/comfort/sport button doesn't do anything to the suspension on these cars, it just alters the throttle response and steering wheel feel. Adaptive suspension changes depending on the mode the car is in but also, from what I've read, depending on the road surface. So if you're on a bumpy road in sport mode the dampers will absorb the bumps better than passive sport suspension would. What you said elsewhere is I believe correct though - that adaptive M adapts to the road surface semi-independantly of the mode the car is in. So even in sports mode, bumps will be less pronounced than in passive sport suspension. Last edited by Feanor; 06-04-2012 at 08:39 AM. |

There definitely is confusion on what the toggle switch does to the chassis and suspension. We had the same confusion with the F10 5-series and it is also now being discussed in the F25 X3 forum. I posted the following comment in the linked thread. http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=698812 Quote:

I have been wondering about this as well. I'm more than sure it should be the same height as non X-Drive cars. BTW the adaptive M suspension doesn't lower the suspension height in sport mode only, it's the same height regardless of which mode you're in.

Yes to all above. You can get any of those options on any line.

Looks like (according to the bmwusa.com configurator) that was already the case for the auto and steering for the 2012's, guess I never tried it on the other lines..
But the adaptive M for 2012 was only available (in the US) on sport-line, correct? Last edited by chrisny; 06-04-2012 at 09:46 PM. |

Sorry. My response was based on 2013 line. Not sure about 2012 but adaptive M is available as a ZDH Dynamic Handling Package option on the 2013 line.

Nope. According to the 2012 "build your own" on bmwusa.com and the 2013 configurator on bmwconfig.com, the sport auto is only available on the sport line or M-sport line. Try to add it to any other line and you automatically get switched to sport.
Also, if you look in the pricing guide for 2013 (posted at the top of this forum), under the option code 2TB for Sport automatic transmission with shift paddles, it says "2TB requires ordering ZMM or ZSL". ZMM is M-Sport, ZSL is Sport. Bottom line: as of 2013, M-adaptive suspension is now available regardless of line, but the sport auto is still only available on sport and M-sport. |

Can you get the summer high performance tires and 155 mph limiter (840) on any line or just sport line (and standard on M Sport)? I think these are not available on base, modern and luxury -- you're stuck with M&S tires and the 130 mph limiter (US market).

It is standard on both Sport & M-Sport but can be downgraded if you get the 18" standard wheel option AND order all season tires (ZAS). |
