335i throttle response compared to e92 n52

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I bought a 2013 335i m sport 6MT about 6 weeks ago for my wife. I have a 08 e92 328i 6MT that I have driven for 5 years now that I have grown quite attached to. I had never driven a 335i until I bought this one for my wife. It is a great car that we are both very happy with. The handling is just as good as my e92 but with a little different feel. However, the only thing I find a little annoying on the f30 is the slight delay in throttle response compared to my n52 powered e92. I am not talking about turb lag but a slight delay from the point of pressing the accelerator and the engine responding. It is always apparent but only mildly frustrates me when driving it on rural twisting roads. As I am leaving the apex of a curve I have to anticipate and hit the throttle a little earlier than my e92 to carve out of the curve. It just gives somewhat of a slight disconnect feel compared to my car. In my n52 powered e92 the response is immediate and precise whereas there is some vaugeness within the throttle response on the 335i. The other thing I have noticed is the engine sound is better in the n52 but the exhaust sound is much better with the n55 335i. I dont know which car I like the best. The power is obviously better with the 335 but the driving dynamics as a whole seem better in the 328i e92 which I find more enjoyable. It makes me wonder if I should pick up a new e92 328i before production stops. Does anyone know if there is a software flash that might improve the throttle response some on the 335. Oh yeah, I always drive it in sport mode.

There is a forthcoming ppk for the n55 in the f30 expected later this year.

Would it be expected to improve throttle response in addition to the power output? Thanks.

The ppk for the N54 improved acceleration, so I'm assuming there would be a noticeable difference. However, I wouldn't expect any drastic results.

There is a thread discussing the forthcoming ppk in the n55 technical forum:

Might seem like a silly question, but are you driving in either Sport or Sport+ setting? Throttle response is much tighter than in default Comfort mode.

e90s didnt have the different driving modes. Comfort is for normal driving when you want twisty throw it sport... a monster is unleashed... lol

I always drive it in sport mode. There is just a slight disconnect between the throttle and engine response at the moment of first pressing the pedal. It requires me to slightly change my driving in that I have to anticipate throttle application slightly ahead of time as compared to my n52 powered e92. It does not ruin the driving experiece as I still really like the car but it would be more enjoyable if it had near instant response as my other car does.

I am wondering if it might improve later since we are now driving it harder in that we are now at 1500miles. We drove it easy during the break in period so I wonder if the ecu learned that lazy easy driving style. Perhaps over time it will relearn our normal more aggresive driving style which might improve throttle response. If not, perhaps some ecu tune might help.

Can we reset this learning ability?

I am getting what I consider to be very good response in my F30 335, especially in sport setting, but will keep an eye open for ppk reviews when posted.

What I don't want is an option in which bragging right is the main benefit. So many mantoys come with options that add 1% to value at 10% of the cost; that dog don't hunt...

I think the dealer can and have heard that disconnecting the battery for a few moments will do it but that would be a pain due to losing other personal settings.

Ron, is your throttle response immediate? Just curious for comparisons sake. The delay on mine is not long but just a slight moment that my 328 does not have. It is just enough to throw me off a little coming out of a curve but would not be any issue for just straight line acceleration.

Mine is pretty immediate. I think it might've been the lazy break in learning...recommend driving it like you stole it.

I have no perceivable issues with throttle response when in sport mode.

I know my TL had a learning mode on the throttle response that would make the response much tighter after a reset....though it would always tend to relearn the more sluggish approach simply because other than 5 minutes of being a boy racer, I don't drive that way in the real world. The TL had a "Shortcut" for doing it (hold down pedal while leaving car in acc mode for X seconds kind of thing) - not sure if the 3 does.

You say you've been driving it in sport mode, have you tried in Sport+?

Agreed. After the break-in period I had to start driving it differently in order for it to become more responsive. Otherwise it's lazy just as I was babying it the first couple thousand miles.

+1 coming from an E46 M3 I'm more than satisfied with the N55. But at the same time would love more power but at a reasonable price.

Thanks everyone, we will drive it with a heavier foot with more aggressive take offs and see what happens over the next few weeks. Sounds like a good excuse to really get on it for some fun.

I have an E70 with the N55, the X5 is on the old platform and very responsive. I do not see any differences with my F30 in terms of throttle responsiveness.
