It's interesting how this seems to irritate people with M cars. Quad exhaust does not mean he's trying to emulate your car! I don't see an M3 badge on the back.

Yea, dont know where you heard that from. Maybe an E46 or previous generation, but not the E9X. Like butter, baby.

I drove the current version M3...no way I could've manage that DD.
I drive 120 miles a day, minimum, so for me, not doable.
If I had a 35mile DD, M3 was more
Manageable.

Highway MPG is where I was sold with the F30 335i...on winter blend with knobby winter tires, 27mpg is amazingly cost effective for me. I've put 4,000 miles on the car and I bought it in mid-Oct!

Lets see post tune, but I usually score better mpg because the AF ratios are nicely leaned out...

Well I can see where it would make more sense for your situation. I drive roughly 40 miles per day +/-10 so I can say that 120miles daily would suck in this car fuel wise. But the ///M is a wicked fun car.

With that said, I've already dropped $5k into my 335i and I've Owned it 2 months.

Didn't buy an M because of the extra cost, the gas mileage, it's in the last year of the model year (I love it), and I NEED 4 doors for the a dog. To me I've never liked the 4 door M3. The coupe seems right.

And, I want a new car now and I don't know what a new four-door M3 would even look like.

The 4th isn't fake. There's an internal funnel that routes exhaust to the fourth pipe...

A 4 cylinder will always sound like a 4 cylinder. In fact BMW M compared the sound of the F10 M5 with the sound of a race 4 cylinder engine (because of it's cross bank exhaust manifold).

There is nothing wrong with adding an exhaust like this, it has nothing to do with posing or trying to look like or sound like an 335i, M3. It's an aftermarket product that the buyer feels enhances the stock car, no different than adding body parts, wheels, etc. People that buy M3s, M5s, Ferraris, Lambos, etc still modify those cars, so what's wrong with someone adding to their 328i? Just amazes me how people come up with the ideas that this is wrong or fake.

"Image is everything" is just as valid as "Function over form". People are different and have different priorities thats why some are happy with a Toyota and others want a BMW. Some want a std. BMW and others want the M-sport package (is the M-sport package mostly appearance or is it really "function over form"???)

Do you understand the general reason some cars have multiple exhaust exits, and why a 2.0 4cyl is not one of them? It's not about sound or looks although that usually follows when you have a car that actually should have 2-4 exits.

Super lame.
Care to explain the "general reason" cars have multiple exhaust exits?

E36 M3 and E34 M5 both have dual tip exhausts from 6 cyl engines
E46 M3 have quad tip exhaust from 6 cyl engine

E60 4 cyl engines have single tip (oval) exhaust
F10 4 cyl engines have dual tip exhaust

The following pictures shows different cars that all have a double exhaust system, independently of engine configuration (V or Inline - 4 or 6 cyl).

E36 M3 exhaust system:

E46 M3 exhaust system:

E30 M3 exhaust system (4 cyl engine):

Ford Sierra Cosworth (2l Turbo 4cyl engine):

Koenigsegg have just one exhaust outlet:

4 cylinder cars with multiple exhaust tips:

Vauxhall Astra VXR (2l Turbo):

Golf GTI (2l Turbo 4 cyl):

Passat Alltrack (2l Diesel):

Ford Mondeo TDCi (2l Diesel):

As far as I can see, multiple exhaust tips are used mostly for appearance, and in some cases to get enough flow capacity.

In the future I suspect we will see 4 cyl M cars again (E30 M3 was 4 cyl) and I won't bet against them having the now mandatory quad exhaust tip.

^^ Valid points. To add to the previous post I believe the new 2013 audi s3, which has a 4-cylinder, also has quad exhaust.

I understand what you're saying. I drive an M-Sport 335i because the aggressive front end appeals to my eyes. It's true that it may be useful in the future if I want to get a bigger turbo, but for now it is purely an "image is everything" choice. I understand this is subjective, and I'm not here to suggest that my view on design is correct and another's is wrong.

However, it would be naive to deny that there is a difference between a well balanced design and simply being gaudy. I think both BMW and Ferrari are companies that straddle that line perfectly. What I mean is the M-Sport is flashy, but it's not a hot-wheels racecar or a car you'd be embarrassed to chauffeur your boss around in.

Personally, as a car owner, I want to continue straddling that line by improving the image of the vehicle to suit my tastes without going overboard. It's the difference between set of chrome spinners, and a set of brushed titanium CSLs. It's the difference between a chrome wrap, and EBII. The difference between altezzas and LEDs. The difference between a roof scoop and a hood bulge. It's the difference between 2 exhaust finishers, and 4.

So if someone posts something that I believe to be over-the-top, then I'm going to make mention of it so that they may have the opportunity to re-evaluate the choice.

As for the exhaust in question, I would rather see a dual tip that mimics the 335i. The dual exhaust on one side is antiquated at best. And I'd like to see a 335i exhaust that pushes the tips out wider.

In the end, this is stupid. I much rather be outside right now driving my car.

My point exactly. Quad tips are used mostly as an aesthetic feature.

Every "true" M car has quad pipes now; the 1M, M3, M5, M6, X5M and X6M.
The 1M has a 3l engine with 340hp and doesn't need quad pipes that flow the same volume of exhaust as the 4,4l M5/M6 560hp engine. Dual tips would have been sufficient (the E36 M3 has 321hp and manages with dual tips...), but for aesthetics quads are used.

To quote the official press release from BMW for the 1M:
Quote:
Last but not least, there are the obligatory four exhaust pipes on the back

Meaning that the 1M has quad pipes, not because it NEEDS it for engineering reasons, but because they are now deemed obligatory on an M car.

Some have argued that that feature is only acceptable on certain engine configurations... Like it's ok on a straight six E46 M3, but not on a straight 4 (like the 300hp Audi S3). Go figure the logic
