Did anyone opt for the BMW extended warranty on the chassis/engine/drivetrain and/or the RFT's? If so, please share your quotes and final pricing (and logic). Seems terribly expensive! (I'm in Vancouver, Canada.)

You can buy the extended warranty at the end of your factory warranty. For my e90 328 Xdrive it was discounted to $2650 for the Gold Extended warranty. It extended my coverage to 6 years 100,000 miles. Well worth it if you're keeping your car for more than 50,000 miles. A water pump on a e90 costs $650 plus labor and goes at 60,000 miles.

So instead of losing $2,650 on the warranty you'll lose just $2,000?

Extended warranties are almost always a bad deal. Just like gambling at a casino, unless you plan to cheat you're guaranteed to lose money in the long-run.

So that's what, 3 oil/filter changes that you can get done for $100 (or less) at a reputable independent BMW shop? Plus probably one "major" service that could cost several hundred dollars. Call it $700-800 total in maintenance saved?

Look, these dealers are (usually) not stupid. For this to work out in your favor, you need at least a couple of major items to go wrong. You also have to be sure they are not excluded in the warranty somehow. Plus you probably have to do the work at a specific location, so if something goes wrong while you're on a road trip you may be SOL and not covered.

We can all point to friends or personal experiences where we or they had expensive repairs and we "wish" we had purchased the extended coverage. It's part of human psychology, we tend to remember these experiences. We tend not to remember all the times that nothing (or nothing much) went wrong. Our brains simply aren't programmed that way.

Dealers (and BMW) are taking advantage of you and your brain's evolutionary traits. Be strong and resist the urge to line their pockets with these excessively profitable extended warranties. They are a bad deal for consumers.

According to this it sounds like brake pads and discs are included, which cost ~$400 on my E46... can't imagine what a 335i with M-Perf brakes is going to cost.

It's a bit of a gamble, but the benefit is that (I think) you can purchase it at any time. If true, you could sit on it and see if your car is one that has issues, or is going to need those maintenance items within that 2 yr span.

The warranty and the maintenance program are separate. Extending both will cost $ for both. Maintenance covers wear and tear items, warranty covers ... warranty items. haha.

I believe that most manufacturers cover the 4-6 years because if something has not failed in the first 4 years (original warranty), it is unlikely to fail in the next 2. You have to realize that corporations don't offer warranties to lose money. They will make money, and quite a bit of it. Insurance is just based on your level of risk tolerance. Some will do it and others could self-insure (put the $2-3k in the bank and if you don't need it at the end of the 6 years, more power to you)

No warranties for me....EVER.

You want someone with a 2007 or 2008 335i to answer the extended warranty question. These are turbocharged and out of the original 4yr warranty period.

I bought a 3rd party 10yr/100k warranty from the dealer for my 2013 because the people I know who drive a BMW say it is a good idea.

That'd be me. Of course by responding here, I might be jinxing myself, but I'm at 5 years and 73,000 miles on my 2008 335ix. While I had some issues (fuel pump and a radiator issue) during the first four years, I've been clean since.

I would only consider the EW offered by BMW Canada, but I would hold off until this time next year. BMWC recently sent out a mailer offering EW on 2012 or earlier models, for a discount of $450 off the regular price, providing that the EW was purchased on line @ bmw.ca

The other downsides to buying EW at the time of purchase: if your car is written-off or stolen before the expiry of the normal 4 year factory warranty, you would lose the entire cost of the EW. In either event, the EW would not be transferable to a replacement car.

However, with the BMWC EW, it is transferable to another owner in the event that you sold your car before the termination of the warranty. This fact would potentially enhance the re-sale value of the car.
