When you read your vehicle SVT through esys, if you see HU_CIC then you have the old headunit, USB video is not supported, only ipod video (provided also you have BMW Apps, option 6NR)

If you see HU_NBT, then you have the new unit, at which case, you will be able to enable video via USB as well as enabling the unit to play video using additional codec (think MKV and stuff), plus storing the video on the hard-drive. And not only that, you can also enable wifi hotspot and stream video from your phone to the headunit
