It is predicted reliability, based on comparing the F30's initial data with previous cars' introductory data and how well those cars did over time. That is, apples to apples.

Strange to call a car "buggy" when it has only been to the dealer once other than your mod visits. I guess two visits would make it a lemon.

My 2007 E90 had a sunroof problem that was resolved with reprogramming. My 2009 E90 had the HPFP replace. No other issues on these 2 cars over 6 years. So far 4400 miles on the new F30 and no issues. As far as I'm concerned, the reliability is fantastic!

It's great that CR liked it but I don't know if I even care about their car ratings anymore. It's mind blowing how much the rankings swing year by year even in cars that were barely changed for the model year.

Then again I'm a lessee, so the warranty period and BMW Assist means that anything that goes wrong really isn't my problem unless it catches on fire with me trapped inside...

Hopefully the ASS doesn't become a problem. I cant see how this feature won't effect the engines components.

A properly designed start stop system lasts so many cycles you won't have to worry about it for the life of the car. Look at all the hybrids on the road for example that start stop way more often than these cars.

Yes, the bug's weren't addressed last time it was in:
1. Squeaky seats.
2. Moaning steering wheel.
3. Random rattles.

#1 is somewhat addressed. #2 and #3 they can't seem to replicate, nor is it consistent for me, so I'll just give it 10,000 miles to sort out.

For reference, my Mitsu Evo VIII, Acura TSX/RDX never had these sort of fitment issues (squeaks, rattles, etc.)

Actually...Consumer Reports survey is the most exhaustive one out there.
Annually...they compile more than a million surveyed replies for owners of all auto's in the survey.

It has given the former 328 model the most reliable rating. Consumer Reports says it does not have enough history to rate the new model (F30)...but it really likes its overall performance and safety.

Looks like the above article might have switched the most/least reliable.

The video of the 328 at the track is pretty impressive! I had one as a loaner, and the auto-stop/start does suck as much as they say it does...

If you read the actual Consumer Report (not USA Today's paraphrase)...you will see that the 7 series is the least liked of the BMW series...followed by the 5 series. The 328 remains the most liked (although, CR likes the F30 a great deal...it says the F30 is too new to rate on reliability). The prior model series E90's...the 328 model....was given the highest reliability rating. The 5, 6 and 7 series have traditionally dragged BMW's overall reliability ratings down.

My Acura rattled...especially in cold weather. Slam the door on a TL or Legend...with the window part way down. It rattles too. As a result, I've stayed away from Acura.

The only cars I've had that didn't rattle over time were a Nissan ZX, 2 Ford Explorers, and my two 3 series.

It has given the new model an excellent reliability rating, if I've reading it right: "Based on the latest survey, we expect reliability of new models will be 76% above average".

Highs: Fuel economy, handling, ride, acceleration, transmission, fit and finish, reliability.

Lows: Engine clatter at startup, controls, abrupt start/stop system, shift lever.

Percentage of owners who would definitely purchase that same vehicle again: 79%.

These arguments are largely why I bought one last month, but then I likely am the "wrong crowd".

I have one of the very early F30s, picked up late Feb 2012. I have about 15k miles on it and it's been very reliable, no rattles. The only issue I had was a faulty sensor so it was telling me 'steering malfunction'. Got the dealer to take care of this, no issues since,

No it isn't. Your argument is invalid. The tires are like shoes you can place whatever you like on it as long as they fit. My car came with low roll resistant tires.. oh god let me go buy back my EVO because by 335BBS's logic my car needs to be modded to have performance handling!

Tires are a wear and tear item that can be replaced by whatever that fits the stock rim. A MOD would be if the 3 series needed M3 WHEELs to improve their performance on par to the ATS. So really it is FACT that a 3 series with the same tires as the ATS will outperform the ATS as the 3 series with inferior tires is only like 2% less performance then the Caddy.

I have to tell you folks that I'm always skeptical with most reviews I read. I'm especially skeptical of the ones in magazines that receive huge revenues from the car companies in the form of advertising.

So a plausible scenario Is the following: a writer for Road and Track or one of the other car magazines is invited to a cocktail party for the introduction of a new model car. He's wined and dined by car manufacturer's executives. Maybe there are some females there who flirt with the writer and it's a fun day for the writer. He gets to test drive the new model, eat some high quality food and hang out with some powerful people and beautiful women. In the meanwhile the advertising department at R&T has already collected money from the car manufacturer for advertising- lots of money.

Do you think it's possible that the writer may be influenced by the goings on that day? Do you think that it's possible that the advertising department who's going to place an ad in the very same magazine or electronic version of the magazine that the writer's review will appear may have some influence over the writer? Do you think that the writer would like to be invited back to an event in the future and is concerned that if he's too critical he won't be?

I'm involved in marketing, and also in politics. The unethical ways people conduct themselves AT TIMES is very disappointing.

I absolutely don't think my scenerio is the norm, but I KNOW it can happen.

I mostly rely on Consumer Reports for car reviews and secondly on people on these forums. You people are great! I love all the back and forth and objective and subjective commentary based on your love of cars and research.

I think the geeky, liberal, pink panty wearing guys who used to get their lunch stolen every day in high school, losers at Consumer Reports who couldn't get laid with a wad of 100 dollar bills at a whorehouse, are much more reliable than all the other car magazines combined. And the liberal women who work at CR who wear comfortable shoes and aren't even attractive enough for those same guys are equally reliable. They don't accept any advertising and that's all you mostly need to know about them. Oh, and they have a state of the art testing facility and buy all the cars they test secretly.
