Safety package

I am thinking of a late spec change and would appreciate your thoughts and experience of blind spot detection and lane keeping assist? Also, what is 5AL - dynamic safety? Package seems more expensive than single options as black panel display comes with pro nav anyway. Thanks for your help.

I guess if you are a dozy driver they are great

......and great news to Mercedes drivers as the lane keeping assist makes sure you indicate when changing lanes

Dynamic safety is a disgrace. it's all stuff that should be standard on a car nowadays like seatbelt pre-tensioners and all that jazz. Honestly, this kind of shit is standard on any normal car and BMW make it an option and only available with options NOBODY wants

This is the ONLY option I ignored,it is just a pain when using, and promotes lazy driving IMO.

I'd agree with Al, pretensioners should be standard and what's also a con is that it looks like US cars do get these bits as standard.

BMW restraint system (UK version)
...for the driver and front passenger, comprises three-point seat belts combined with integral tensioners and force limiters. So in the event of a collision, passengers are held safely in their seats. The seat belt buckles in the rear are coded to avoid them being incorrectly fastened.

BMW restraint system (US version)
...for the driver and front passenger combines three-point safety-belts, automatic safety-belt pretensioners, seat bolsters that help prevent occupants from sliding forward, and Active Head Restraints. The system helps provide optimum restraint in a collision.

Thanks for your comments. Dynamic safety seems to whiplash preventing headrests only - sad BMW don't fit safety items as standard. Lazy driving is my concern and a camera low down in the front bumper is just asking to be damaged.

I had it ticked at the very beginning when I wanted the full black panel display.

Didn't know what's what then. Asked the sales person to find out all the details and tell me as he didn't know either. Apparently it closes the windows also when it thinks you're about have an accident.

Unless safety is more important for you, get something else that you will actually notice day to day.

I can only agree with everyone else.

This was one thing I was considering until I looked into it and realised exactly what it was. The driver aids are no doubt a great safety feature but if you're the sort of driver who is not checking the blind spot or able to stay in lane then maybe it's about time to take the train

The only thing that appealed was the internal safety features. The trouble is, whereas the other parts are available separately the restraint system is only in the package

In the end, my money went on other options. I've already had more use out of those

I like to idea of Active Cruise Control with stop and go. I just need the leather jacket, chest wig and I would be the Hoff.

I spec'd this on my car as I like my gadgets... being warned when there is someone in your blind spot is perhaps the most useful feature (not that it's ever been a problem for me).
