low oil
Low oil light came on and took it to dealer and they had to add a quart. I'm at 8k miles. I said isn't it alarming that oil level is low on a new car? The service guy said "have you owned a bmw before??" I said no but generally with any car you don't lose oil right? He said it's not abnormal to have to top off between service.
What's the deal? do all you guys have oil hanging out in the garage? is he full of it? |

Had the exact same conversation with my dealer last week (10K). Apparently completely normal. All internal combustion engines consume some oil, albeit not much (unless there is a problem). Replacing every 3,000 miles keeps this from becoming an issue. It all boils down to the interval between oil changes that makes this small consumption apparent. The high performance M cars will burn about 1 quart every 4,000 miles. For our car, I heard every 8 - 10K is the average per quart.

thanks for verifying. I guess there should be lots of us hitting 8-10k miles now. I'm wondering if all of the 335ers are running to get oil.
that's pretty inconvenient to have to bring the car in for oil and then not too long later again for service. |

I'd say it's more a function of the extended service intervals. Sure, every engine consumes oil...just shouldn't be over a short interval. Personally, my old Saab turbos never used a drop - being down a quart at 8k is significant, keep an eye on it.

My car alerted me at 6000, asking for topping off because it was getting close to the minimum oil level...
so i took the car in at around 6000 miles, then again at 9000 miles is my 335i that thirsty for oil ?? My First service is due in 3ooo miles to so, perfect timing for changing the oil and topping it off with fresh ones.

All turbo cars burn oil!! This is my first BMW but not my first car with a turbo so I know its normal. It actually took longer than expected mine came on around 7000miles. process was quick and easy.
I drove straight to the service area and told the guy standing out there he goes to a cabinet they have setup outside grab a quart fill it and run engine check from idrive. no paper work or exchange of names or anything. process was under 10mins.
