Folding mirrors...

So, I did not think I had auto folding mirrors, but when I park in some places I fold them in just to be safe (very rarely I might add). I just noticed that when I unlock the car, the mirrors automatically unfold. So how do get them to fold automatically? Looked in the manual and spun out before finding an answer.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Send a message via Yahoo to john08135i
On us cars you can only have them fold in by coding your car.

In Australia we just hold our lock button as we walk away

I thought the button next to the window adjusting dongle on the driver armrest closes them. And also coding it for the remote.

I think this is correct as when I hit that button, the mirrors fold and unfold. Thank you!

Same in the UK. Only thing is it takes a few seconds holding the lock button before the mirrors respond, and I wonder if you drain the fob battery faster by using this feature?

you can even leave them folded in and when you take off and reach a certain speed they open back up automatically.

The first time I pulled the car into my garage, I turned off the power and sat in it for a few minutes. The mirrors were folded in. I thought it was just a great feature.

Now I can't make it happen again. I must've accidentally hit the button next to the mirror adjust? Can't find anything in the manual. I just tried holding the lock button, but no go. I guess you're right about the coding.

Sorry -- apparently this is old news for U.S. owners -- according to the tips and tricks sticky. I'm only about half way through it.

This is NOT what I was supposed to be doing tonight... I need to be doing the bills!

If you adjusted your mirrors and left the switch to the right they will no longer fold. Click it back to the left and press the button they will fold again. Found this out after adjusting my mirrors and asking about it on the forums. Thought I'd pass on the knowledge.

Has anyone in the USA successfully had their dealers program the mirrors to fold automatically either when the car is turned off, or locked??

I was told by the tech this week that the coding for folding the mirrors with the keyfob was a backdoor code and they were not allowed to use it. I did have them successfully code for the car to unlock automatically when I hit the park button. That was nice!

I asked for this at delivery and they told me they were not authorized to do this.

Thats too bad...Mercedes and Audi have this on a number of their vehicles, and I thought BMW did this too on the X5 and 7...

I guess I understand the dealer not wanting to code it...but why put such a nice feature on the car, and then not have have the maximum convenience part not be activated?? Seems silly to me.

here is the final and definitive answer to your questions: US cars only!

Straight out from the dealership:

You can have the mirror fold and unfold via the little button on the driver's door. (Period).
If folded and the car locked, when you unlock the car, the mirrors unfolds automatically.
Once in the car and stationary, if you decide to have the mirror folded, then when you take off, the mirrors will automatically unfold themselves when you reach the speed of 20mph.

Via (backdoor) code (as i have done with my car) (Thanks to Frogman):
you can set that you fold and unfold the mirrors with your keyfob.
With this added functionality (which is standard for cars outside of the US),
if you fold the mirror via the button inside the car, then lock the car,
when you unlock the car, the mirrors wont unfold, it will only unfold if you push the inside button again or drive above the speed of 20mph. (as member Vitoco has pointed out below)
Everything else above stays true.

I hope i was able to clarify a bit more for you, if not once and for all.

He's talking out of his pooh hole. It comes as standard with all cars with folding mirrors.

If I lock my car and then again press and hold the lock button, they fold. When I unlock, they unfold. However, if I fold them via the button inside prior to exiting the vehicle and then just lock the car, they will NOT unfold when unlocking again. And thats genius, cause if you park close to a wall or beam on passenger side and you have folded them to get close, if they would automatically unfold when unlocking you would jusr rape that mirror. This is european spec standard.

With the backdoor code do you still have to hold the lock button down like we do in the UK? I'd rather they folded automatically each time.

I believe its programmable how long you want to wait for it to fold. If you set it to 0 it'll do it as soon as you press the button.
