Bummer no ~215hp N47 TT, but this is otherwise very good news.

I think perhaps the 6 cyl will be labeled *30d. It would seem a better fit against what they tend to name diesels in that sort of power range in other countries.

this is fantastic news to finally get confo these 2 engines are coming! Hopefully, there's a widespread proliferation in the lineup including the f25, not just f30, f10. the only thing that would be better is confirmation that the f20 is coming over at some point.

BMW Blog seems to think it will be called a 325D (for marketing purposes, slightly cheaper than 328i) and I would guess the 255HP engine would be the 335D since its taking place of the old 335D and will probalby cost a little more than the 335i. BMW marketing would say "can't have a more expensive car with a smaller number"

I doubt that the F31 will get the diesel unfortunately. But I hope I am wrong. I really have a hard time imagining we'll see diesel coupes or convertibles in the US, but we'll see I suppose.

Perhaps. If so then it will only make us look accross the pond all the more longingly for "the real" *25d models with the N47 TT (I mistakenly called it N47S earlier) and "the real" *35d models with the N57 TT.

I think what we are getting is the single turbo engines, unfortunately. But I shouldn't be too down, nor look a gift horse. This is really good news.

The official times for F30 320d are 7,5 (7,6 auto) for 0 - 100km/h and European version has 184hp so I doubt that it will have better numbers in US.
Audi has only 177hp and 8,2 sec for 0-100km/h (manual version).
With these news BMW might be again on top, it depends how fast they will obtain the approvals to sell these models.

I think you will get the same twin-scroll turbo as us. It has all the advantages of two separate turbos but none of the disadvantages (space and weight).

I think two years a go In England they did 1000 mile test betwen BMW520D and Prius, and MPG was almost the same. Now you have to take in to consideration that 5 series ways about 500-600lbs more than 3 series.

One needs to be careful when looking at EPA ratings. The number which goes on the window sticker has been reduced from the actual test results by about 30%. The actual test result number is what is used for CAFE government regulations in the US. If if 50 MPG is the window sticker number, that is indeed amazing. If it is the unadjusted test result, it is still good, but not quite as good.

What we REALLY needed was the 118d by now. Are you serious? Do you know how easy it would have been to sell those things? Let's see.... I have a choice between a fucking civic si or a bimmer for the same price, or probably an even better lease.

If I were the decision maker at BMW HQ, I would have aimed at the US's young population with a 118d starter-bimmer years ago. Everyone here knows that once you get your first one, you're a customer for life. So why not get them an average of probably 5-10 years earlier?!?! Would have been an easy sell when I was a CA.

From what I've been told, in the currently available diesels from BMW in the USA, even though they have the same model numbers as those sold elsewhere, the engine is NOT the same. It may be that with the new ones, they can now meet the same requirements for say Europe as those for the USA. Even though we have gone through requiring low sulphur diesel in the USA, it still has a fair amount more than that sold in Europe, and, I think, that is one reason why they haven't been able to use the same engines. With the smaller market here, it just didn't make sense to certify too many separate versions on various platforms. Hopefully, that is changing, based on what's been said.

FWIW, the EPA highway rating on my vehicle is 27mpg, and on my last trip, I got a bit over 29 and have seen 30 before. Not bad on an F70 with x-drive. The diesel would just be icing on that cake.

There is no one else talking about the 325d. It is not available anywhere. The N47 twin turbo is only available in the 525d and X1 xDrive 25d. BMW is not going to slap a "325d" label on a 320d. That would not make sense.

The 6 cyl option would be the N57 "twinpower turbo", which is the single turbo, variable nozzle unit used in the current F30 & F31 330d. This engine meets the Euro 6 standard, so is a natural consideration for meeting the EPA standards.

Actually, the engines used in the 335d and x5 d were the same as those sold in the European market except for the addition of the SCR (urea) system and associated programming.

As you said- It would not make sense for them to design a different engine for this small diesel market. That's why the Euro 6 emission standards kicking in in 2014 (and met by the engine in the 330d) make such good sense for introduction of this engine into our market.

low (<500ppm) sulfur diesel was phased out from retail pumps in Dec 2010. It was replaced by ultra low (<15ppm) sulfur diesel beginning in 2006. This made it compatible with diesel particulate filter technology that was mandated beginning with the 2007 MY for diesels sold in the US, and near equivalent to Euro diesel in that regard.
