This.

I didn't buy the 335d because it didn't come with a manual.

I grew up driving small turbo diesel hatchbacks and sedans (all manual) and they are just as much fun as the petrol versions in 95% of driving conditions.

If it was true, I think the Prius would be in serious trouble as lots of "wealthy" people buy it just for its environmental image, they would probably much rather drive a BMW that gets 50 MPG on average!
Believe. (See my post above...)

My Prius owning colleague is now driving around in an F30 316d (a detuned 2.0l diesel).

If the 320d is cheaper than the 328i, that will sell like crazy! I can't wait to drive both

Should be about $1500 cheaper. (Based on UK differential).

You guys are crazy.

BMWs diesels have engine noise only a deaf could love.
If it has to be a diesel, I much prefer the sound from Audi's smoother sounding diesel engines.

I agree. The US vs. Euro tests are definitely different, but I do think the Euro tests (in US MPG) maybe provide a good indication of what's possible if driven carefully. So I wouldn't doubt 50+ MPG is possible on a 60 MPH multi-hour cruise, it just probably won't have a 50 MPG EPA rating.

If one looks at the UK website right now, the E91 320d gets about 25% better economy (Euro combined) than the E91 335d, both with automatic. The E90 335d is rated at 36 US MPG highway, so add 25% and you're at 45 MPG. Just a guess of course, but I'm expecting a mid-40s US highway rating.

Regardless of the specifics, it's just nice to finally have the option of even buying one! I think once my 318ti hits 300,000 miles in a few years (and I can finally justify getting rid of it), I'll pick one of these up a couple years used. Was waiting for the E90 320d but it never came...

Schweeeeeet!!

Now, can you guys (BMWAG) figure out the torque issue with Getrag to give us a 6MT with any of those? Please?
The folks at Tremec don't seem to have any issue with 400+ torque.

I think BMW should offer at least "special/limited edition" 320d touring, say "efficient dynamics edition(?)", models in the US since they are not going to offer the monster 550d xdrive models?

A number like that I would believe, 35 city and 45 highway is probably what the US EPA numbers will come in at. But 0-60 in 7.1 seconds has to be the fastest car available in the US that gets around 40 MPG, Audi used to have the crown at around 8.2 seconds everything else is around 9 seconds, so the BMW 2.0 would blow everything out of the water.

The Top Gear test was an M3 v Prius flat out round a track. The M3 won.

A more relevant test was Prius v 520d by the Times newspaper;

Any rumor on the time frame here? I mean the car already exists in Europe but I know they have to make a few modifications because of that silly State that refuses to just fall into the Pacific.

I am really in the market for a car this fall but might be able to hold out until Spring 2013 if this could be an early release 2014 model...

I might just go from buying a 335xi to a 325d
I have been looking for a highly effecient car that didn't put me to sleep while driving it but couldn't find one so I was just going to get a 335xi, but this changes things.
