8.8" Screen Retrofit

Hi,

I have a base 6.5" screen on my 320i. Is it possible to retrofit a 8.8" screen on it?

Thanks

i believe you need a new CIC head unit to go with the new screen

going to cost a fair bit, and wont be an easy task imo

I have been looking at this. I think you need the head unit and screen. While at it,you would probably want to install the usb plug in the glovebox to take advantage of putting music on the hard drive.

Then the whole think has to be coded to work on your car.

While at it, one might want to activate Nav too.

There are ebay options for the hardware for around $1000. But those units come with Euro maps.
Activation is ~$450 through Bimmertech.
Then you have to somehow load North American maps. Not sure how to do that one!

I thnk Bimmertech has a turn key solution for ~$1950..

Plug and play. All coding and maps included.
Combox is extra though.

Ok. More details. Here is what all is needed for a retrofit:

Large Screen
i-drive controller
Combox
Headunit
New shark fin with GPS antenna
New wiring from Combox to headunit
New wiring from Aux/USB to Combox (?)
Maps with update - if your head unit is nto from your part of the world
Activation codes

All together >$3000

Groan! I am so stupid for not having ordered this when I bought my car.

You are not stupid. You didn't think you'd need it at the time you purchased your car.

IMO, its an expensive retrofit and a time consuming install. If you consider it, be committed and you'll want to be sure you are capable and willing to remove many bits of your car interior and probably do some minor rewiring.

Patryk at Bimmertech is a good source to guide you.

Agreed, Didnt think i needed bluetooth audio streaming. But i'm regretting it.

If possible i want to retrofit 8.8" display and Combox. I was told by the guys in Toronto that you can do the Combox installed with the entry HU but not sure about large screen.

Patryk at bimmertech seemed to think I could not get just the combox installed in my car without nav.

I think the headunit for models that have Combox are different. As well, the aux and USB go to combox not the headunit like ours.

If there is a way I can get just the combox and keep it under $1000 I am in for sure.

I was quoted this by JR Auto Electronics. I got their number from Bimmerretrofit site as their dealer.

Called them up and gave my VIN, they looked it up an sent me this quote. I was told they will wire the existing usb/aux wiring directly to Combox or pay $190 more for plug and play cable they provide to re-rout the wiring. They will code the car and firmware update the HU to integrate it to combox. After they said i can download latest updates from BMW for the combox. 540 for combox and 250 for install and coding

Give them a call and see. The person i spoke to is Jarek. Seem to know what he's was talking about. I think he's the head tech there.

Thanks for the info. I will call them tomorrow.

Out of curiosity, what options do you have in your car. I have a basic 328 xdrive sport line with heated steering wheel only.

I am waiting to hear back from Jarek. Still baffled!

If I can install Combox media and get it working without upgrading to CIC navigation, I am all in for that. I was surprised when bimmertech said I needed CIC nav for Combox, considering you can buy a car with audio streaming (Combox) and yet not have Nav.

He takes some time to respond, but he's good. I was baffled too, i was told by many that it couldn't be done without Navi. But I have been looking into it, from contacts in Europe and they all say it can be done too. But, I can buy a used NBT based navi from Europe for around $1200 including shipping.

With NBT, combox is included/built in. I"m sure i can install it myself with proper wiring too. But it's getting Navi activated here for NA with FSC from BMW that's costly. And I hardly use Navi. All i want is a Large screen instead of 6.5" And i was told even that can be done for our HU with coding.

But let me know if you are going to go do it. I might too if i don't decide to get the NBT. Maybe I will just install the combox and upgrade the Audio.

This is what Igot back from Jarek:

Yes, Combox media installation is possible however is a lot of work due to missing optical wiring in the back. It will give You only BT streaming.

I suggest to install new NBT Navigation system which includes Combox media functions – description in attachment. Is a little bit more expensive but it will give You much more.

The price for NBT is $2358 + labour, installation, coding - $380

Sounds like a different story than you Vithy.

Strange, Why would he say it's a plug and play option. I even asked him about wiring and he said that they will rewire everything.

"If You like to buy and install the Combox by Yourself $539 is without the Plug and play connector or any MOST and antenna adapters
If the installation is done in our shop , we provide all of the necessary connectors, MOST, Combox, pins , except Plug and Play (we modify the pins adjustment in the car)
We can provide You with Plug and Play connector per Your request – the additional cost is $109 – but is not necessary to have it – it is only for easier installation and quick connection."

This is the response i got from him. Wonder if they are trying to up sell the NBT

I am not sure why they are giving us different answers either. I think the only way to figure it out is to put our options next to each other and see if one of us has something the other person does not have. Vithy,

Did he tell you if in addition to music streaming from your music player (iphone, googl play music, etc) if you will get:

1) Pandora music streaming or another online radio app such as tunein radio?
2) Phone Navigation directions over bluetooth?
3) Any album art if you usean ipod/iphone with the cable?
4) iphone/ipod control using regular iphone white cable as opposed to Y-Cable?

Thanks
