Creaking steering?
Something new and strange just started happening with my 328i.
When turning the wheel from straight, the steering wheel makes a light creaking sound. It's something I can only hear without the radio on. If I put my hand on the steering column, I can feel the creaking through the plastic cover. |

I hear the same sound.. kinda like light tires going over gravel...
I only hear it when pulling into garage and turning wheel and 0 - 2 mph. I assume it is the electric steer mechanism kicking in. Anyone know? |

I had this or something like this a few months ago. On wobbly roads in Comfortmode there was a shreek/creak from the steering column. After 3 to 4 times at my dealership they replaced/reatached(?) a softplastic/rubber(?) steering column cover plus they re-attached the cables inside. From then on the shreeking is gone.
I'd say go to your dealer and let them drive and hear what you mean. Cheers Robin |

I just posted about this yesterday, Dealer ordered me up a piece for the steering column... its three letters that start with a S--... I can't remember! I will call my dealer today and ask. Sounds like we have another recall on our hands because thats 4 of us that have the issue on this site within an hour...

I'll definitely be able to reproduce the sound for the dealer when I get a chance to take it in. It happens all the time whenever I turn the wheel.
It doesn't seem to be affected by the positioning of the steering column either. I've tried moving it in/out, up/down, and it seems to make no difference. |

For the people who have this problem, when did it start (how long or how many miles after getting the car)? Did it get louder and more frequent or it just kicks in one day?
I think I hear something too, but it is faint... Just attributed it to the electric motor as well. I am assuming it is a pretty loud sound. Possibly associated w/ production date(s)? |

I don't recall it progressively getting louder. It seems like it just magically started doing it one day. Interesting side note is that I am also dealing with the vibrating steering wheel issue discussed in another thread, and it wasn't making the creaking noise until after the last attempt to fix the vibration at the dealer. It feels like they tightened the steering just a smidge in hopes that would fix the vibration. It is far less noticeable, but now I'm dealing with this creaking noise, which happens whenever the wheel is turned from the straight position. It only happens at that moment - it doesn't keep happening as you continue to turn the wheel. |
