(Formerly)High Priced Used Cars

I have always been fascinated by the huge drop in prices that very high priced cars take.

The thought of a 120K MB SL 500 being had for 25K really sounds incredible.

I have trouble even contemplating what the costs associated with repairing/maintaining these card would be.

My question is, what cars if any that were 80K-100K new can be considered( and which cannot be considered) without encountering huge costs along the way.

Please describe the costs for repair and maintenance for your choices

Cars must have depreciated beyond any CPO period so basically you are on the hook for anything that goes wrong

thanks

Well i can tell you one thing, and mercedes with a hydraulic suspension is a no-go. Including all S, SL, CL, classes. That is why they get so cheap. Nobody wants to drop 6-10k to fix them.

Along the same lines, does anyone know about reliability and repair/replacement costs of the new AMG SpeedShift MCT transmission? I know the first ones were the 2009 E63 and SL63 but by now there should be a decent idea on their outlook. If they aren't terrible then those Mercedes models could be a decent way to take advantage of Mercedes epic depreciation.

My guess would be A LOT!! I would suspect thats the case with any repair on an AMG specific (or M car) part.

Maseratis depreciate fast as hell, they're pretty nice but maintenance can be pretty expensive.

A 120k car is a 120 k car any way you look at it. The maintanence and repairs will be expensive especially on benzes. You can pick up gallardos and continetnal gt's for $90k... but imagine the other costs.

Love the AMG Benzes E55 is great.

How expensive is expensive, is both normal maintenance and frequently repaired items.

Anyone know of a source?

The AMG cars are not crazy pricey until something goes wrong/breaks and then they're very pricey to maintain. The E55 for $25-35k is the best deal out there IMO, I've driven several and have a few friends with them and they're rocket ships and very luxurious. But if something happens to the car, motor or otherwise, it is VERY expensive to fix. IIRC the normal maintenance items are about double my M3 items, brakes etc.

AMG's depreciate faster than any car I know of. The deal is to get one that is only 2-4 years old and already very depreciated though, because that car should still be reliable. I'd be comfortable buying a 996TT too, they are pretty damn reliable and drive great. Obviously the Italians are a different braket maintenance-wise, or at least the F-cars and Lambos. But 996TT or E55 FTW.

Isn't part of the reason for the quick depreciation the fact that when the car was initially manufactured the technology in it was cutting edge, but by the time it's 5-8 years old Toyota Camry's are rocking some of the tech? At least from a creature comfort and interior point of view (I'm not at all trying to relate AMG engines to Toyota engines).

Basically people are paying a premium to have gadgets that other cars don't have yet.

I don't think a new 2012 Camry has the same technology as a 2002 S class... not even close IMO

Our new 2012 Altima doesn't have as much as my 2005 C class did.

All those large, gas guzzling, luxurious sedans (land yachts) depreciate extremely quickly. A8, 7-series, S class, Infiniti M, all the same.

If you want one of these with good reliability, look at the Infiniti M45 with the V8. Extremely reliable car.
