Strong likes and dislikes - 335i

As some of you know, I'm working on a review of the F30 335i as a follow-up to my 328i review.

I'd be interested in hearing (in this thread) from current 335i owners on what they really really like - and what they think needs improvement or they simply don't like.

I'll incorporate some of these (with attribution) in the story.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Radio commands on the steering wheel should be on the Left side
and cruise control commands should be on the right side!!

Why?

because, (and especially important for those driving a manual car), your right hand is constantly need to shift, and/or adjusting the HVAC.
your left hand is required to stay on the steering wheel, and as such, if you need to shift and control the radio (the two things you do most in a manual car), you still could if the radio control were on the left side of the steering wheel !)

As currently set up... i am limited in my possibilities...
The cruise control should be on the right side because, when you cruise on the highway... it is most likely, independent of the type of transmission, you would have both hand on the steering wheel... and thus you can use your right hand to control your cruise...

...

Why Didn't BMW give the Blind Spot aid Standard on all their cars??
basic Safety shouldn't be at a premium... Even a Ford or Toy Camry has those standard... makes my luxury sport sedan a shame compared to the family sedan...

There will be more pros and cons... but for now, that's all i have in mind...

Thanks and sincere regards,

EDIT: i guess my quick review is not really associated to only the 335i, but also accross the 3 series line up...
... so i will try to remember what is specific to the 35i.

The Toyota Camry does not have a Blind Spot Monitor standard. It's not even an option until the highest trim levels. I kind of doubt there are any Ford models that have it standard either.

Saying that just like in England we here have RHD cars and drive on the left side of the road, So the controls on the steering wheel are perfect for us.

Right hand always on the steering wheel

Steering wheel controls are the same for LHD and RHD

I don't have mine yet but I would have liked an extra 20hp or at least be at an level so these 328i owners cant say its not that big of a difference

Well yeah, when will we see the 320hp version of the N55 as seen in the 640i Gran Coupe? The 35d when it comes will blow the current 306hp 35i out the water with 313hp and 640NM, as seen in the F10/F11. The 640d matches and beats the 640i in all measurable areas except price as the diesel is a few grand more to manufacture. But then, you guys in Amuuurrrica find driving stock a felony so I shan't think you are going to lose sleep

Lack of space in the center console. Nets on the back of the front seats are ugly and look cheap. Could be a nicer-looking leather flap thing like in the 535i

Not deal breakers, but the guy wants specific complaints.

Also, don't Americans have to pay extra for folding seats? That's crap.

This could be a setting in iDrive to swap the controls but then it may be a safety issues with cruse control?

BTW - Brits drive on the left becasue... In the Middle Ages (1300 AD) you kept to the left for the simple reason that you never knew who you'd meet on the road in those days. You wanted to make sure that a stranger passed on the right so you could go for your sword in case he proved unfriendly.

Its that simple!

When I was being taught how to drive a car (in my old country, everyone has to go through a specialized school for this with a minimum of an X amount of driving time before you are allowed to take a test), they actually told us it is a very bad habit to actually have your right hand constantly on the gear shift. I forgot what it was but there was some kind of possibility it would do something to the transmission or something... lol, I know it sounds vague but yeah, it has been many years since I went through all that lol

Btw, regarding the controls being on the wrong side...

Perhaps it is a matter of how you see it but when the cruise control is on the left, and you always hold that side in your hand, it is easy to switch speeds if needed as your hand is already there, this while you control the iDrive with the other hand

Personally I don't have any problem with the controls as they are now. I hardly switch channels or music source so I'm actually ok with it. I never really have my right hand on the wheel anyways (I used to drive stick and when I had my X5 I got used to have my hands on the iDrive controller, so I like to sit like that now lol) and I just as easy switch channels or do something else with the iDrive as I would with my steering wheel. The only thing I really do with my steering wheel buttons is voice activated stuff (and I don't do that often either) and changing speeds on the cruise control. So, for me, the current situation works best =)

I was taught that too saying if you leave your hand resting on the shifter it causes a strain on the transmission. Who knows if thats still true today LOL

Didn't you get the memo that states 328's Step fuel economy is now 22/33mpg, like the 335i?

BMW 528i N20 fuel economy is also down according to BMW.

Positives: you get 4 cars in one. Eco gives you unreal fuel economy, Comfort mode is good for your wife when you're too drunk to drive home, Sport mode makes driving fun everywhere you go, and Sport+ mode makes you feel like a racecar driver, complete with the possibility of crashing into something if you're not careful.

Also, the adjustable bolsters are sweet. 3 way split folding seats give you every option you could need, the idrive screen is the most responsive and highest resolution of all the luxury brands.

Makes me wonder what will happen with the 335 and 535 when they revise those numbers..
