auto stop start and battery life

is having it on would shorten the battery life, I noticed that the headlights get weak for a moment everytime the car starts again.

Perhaps a little bit, but starting a warm, primed engine is an easy task for the battery.

The lights dim only because there is an additional load on the electrical system while starting. This is no problem.

Yes, I'd imagine it would shorten the life of the battery and starter since they're being used a lot more frequently.

I popped the battery cover off and noticed my F30 has an AGM battery, so that should help with battery life.

i would worry about starter because definitely more expensive piece of equipment and more labor for sure. At the same time Batteries always have a longer warranty on them about 84months or so and for 2 to 3 years free replacement anyways after that they prorated.

These starters are different from normal ones and designed specifically for Auto Stop/Start.
On them you can also replace the major wear part without replacing the whole starter, unlike most traditional starters.

Thanks for the clerification that makes a lot more sense. I was really worried about it.

The battery technology seems to be the weakness. E90 series cars don't have too long a battery life before the battery loses charging efficiency and stop/start can fail to function.
