Discovered something cool on 335i

I thought this deserved a thread on its own. Since I am approaching 1000 miles on my 335i the driving has become more aggressive as far as revs are concerned. I never really worried about keeping the speed down.

So anyhow, I was talking to someone via bluetooth while in sport/manual mode using the shift paddles. I was revved out to about 5,000 rpms and progressed to upshift through a couple of gears and WOWWWW!! The sound was amazing. I kept my foot on the gas while upshifting and the exhaust note was abrupt and pronounced with sort of a boom sound after each shift.

I know the boom description sounds silly, but it was pretty awesome.

I encourage you guys to rev your car in a lower gear with the radio off and then do a couple of upshifts to hear what I am talking about. Not sure that this is the same with the 328i, but it is damn cool.

it is going BOOM because it is reminding you that you should not exceed 4500 RPMs before breaking in your car = 1200 miles. this awesome BOOMing sound, which is actually the car telling you it is breaking, will go away after the break-in period.

Have you had any overrun on upshifts/downshifts? I've heard a couple 335i's crackle and bang on the overrun! Can the 28i overrun?

Breakin has absolutley nothing to do with this

The noise your hearing is because of fuel cut. The car cuts fuel for a short instance in between shifts and because the 8AT shifts so quick, the time where the car is "off" power creates the gap in the exhaust you are hearing.

This is commonly refferd to in VAG terms as a DSG fart.

I actually know EXACTLY what you are referring to. I have learned that the sound is more pronounced when the car is warmed up too. The sound is like a quick "burble" between shifts.

I once test drove an X6-M and it made this exact sound. When I got my 335i and heard it make a toned down version from the X6-M's sound...I was very happy

I know the feeling all too well. You're going to love it though, when that car pulls up after it's detailed and just sitting there waiting for you to pop it's cherry. I only allowed my client advisor ten minutes to do his shpeel. After ten minutes, I said thanks, no questions and gtfo.
