Can you do it? Let's see.

As far as the GT?
AHHH, my eyes! IT burns!

BMW, please stop the insanity.
That is all.

I've been waiting and waiting to see, FINALLY, what the new 2 series coupe will look like. You know, the NEW replacement for the 1 series coupe. Nothing. But, you find time to give us this thing!?

Sure, I love the added utility of a wagon, but would take this over a sedan or small SUV if I had no other choice.

I personally believe that a retractable spoiler can be a of aerodynamic use on a car.
BUT, and that is an important but, I say burn it and kill it if it has a button inside controlling the spoiler. I can't take those idiotic Audi TT drivers driving around town at 5 miles an hour with their little spoiler out.

The E61 5er Touring led a defeat for the Premium wagon and the rise of the Premium SUV in North America.
Volvo and Audi followed , Mercedes are experiencing the same effect with the E-Klasse against the all-new ML-Klasse.
The F31 Touring is coming to the US but if it underperforms it will be pulled sooner than later. In this segment Audi have already pulled the A4 Avant and Volvo and Mercedes did not bother with the C-Klasse and V60 respectively. Again thanks to the Premium mid-size SUV.

The 3er GT is again more euro-centric but developed to appeal globally. It will embody the features that make the 5er GT highly Individual but in a more sportier package. It is a 3er underneath and that means it will not be a wall flower.
The clever thing here is that a lot of the panels are fake and really add mass to the car but underneath it is very well proportioned and sculpted.
Again the 3er GT will share the same engines as the 3er Sedan and Touring so it will open the market to a new generation of customers , especially a specific demographic who would never have considered a BMW before.

Which is another thing that can count as a success for the 5er GT.
Nine out of ten owners have made the 5er GT their first BMW.

In a little piece of trivia- The active aerodynamics of the 3er GT is not BMW's first venture into equipping its cars with the function.
In the late nineties when in Germany the Audi TT was turining Turtle on the autobahn. BMW became concerned about the swoopy rear end of the Z8 and tested a flip-up active aid , however it never became an issue as the BMW Z8did not need it.
BMW M were also developing one for the production model of the CS Concept. Which had the road been much smoother we would have had it now.
M 40. Tease what have I missed?

Haha yeah. I checked one out at a local dealer last week. I love the interior and the ipad like navi screen. The rear looks like a 5 and the front just doesn't look right from the side. The way it droops down. I can't wait to see an M-sport in person.

Not a fan. I agree that it would look better on the 2-door version.

Welcome to 1990

My VW Corrado had that. And yes, it broke. In the 'up' position too. All it does is make for a heavier rear hatch.

Aside from this gimmick I think this GT/SportHatch/ShootingBrake/4doorCoupe will end up looking pretty good.

FWIW:
I grew up with hatchbacks (everyone did in the early 80's in NA) & although they never perform as good as coupes, that rarely matters when 99% of the people in coupes are not drivers. I will gladly (& always) give up a tad in kinematic performance to have more utility. As I am not on the track 24/7 making money.

So, for what little I gain (or, even loose) in terms of performance will not matter because I (myself) can make up for the deficiency. But the benifit of hatch stays with me 100% of the time. Only people with massive egoes and no driving skills are the ones who obsess over best/fastest ad nauseum, while the rest of us are in the back woods getting air and giggling our asses off @ phun.

I wish my E30 M3 was a hatch, I would've have went on allot longer weekend trips and tore up more roads had it a tad more utility. (sacrilege, i know)

That said, the current 3 series is just too big of a vehicle for a single passenger, just not efficient nor respectable to the environment for my long-term needs. The 3 series GT is a great idea, but I am waiting on the 2 Series (GT, or M2 Hatch?).

I like what BMW is doing here, adding more utility to a car, than adding more performance to an SUV...

The 3rd side window is actually longer/pointier, render is missing an extra character line (like the 5 GT, but bends down in the rear door), side vent is vertical and placed much lower in the front fender (behind the wheel). Kidneys are larger, and have a bigger connection to the headlights than in the sedan.

Personally I like the GT... Especially like the 5er GT. That thing looks nice.

Not a big fan of the 5er GT but this mock up is actually not that bad. It reminds me of the 318ti's. I like this.
