Thumbs up 2012 BMW 328i Track Test Performance Results - Inside Line (Video)

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
0-60mph: 5.9 sec
0-60mph (with 1 ft rollout): 5.5 sec
1/4 mile: 14.1 sec @ 98.9mph
60-0mph braking: 115ft
Skid Pad: 0.88g
Slalom: 67.1mph

Compare to official stats/specs @ http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=592598

Acceleration: Rev-limited to 3,800 rpm with ESC on. No limit (besides redline) with it off. Seems relatively indifferent to launch technique. Only a few hundredths separate clutch dump from careful modulation by 60 mph. Shifter is less likable when rushed in this environment. Engine is done at 6,500.

Braking: Confident pedal every stop but fade (+/- 6 feet) is present. Not the best braking in the segment.

Handling:

Skid pad: Heavy steering with quite good communication at the limit. More body roll than expected makes sensing grip limits more difficult. Still, good balance. Adjustable, but slower to respond than I'd prefer.

Slalom: Ample body roll makes quick transitions feel awkward. Even so, limits are reasonably well defined. Excellent ESC produces quickest slalom time by 0.04 second.

Compared to E90 328i:

pretty Close to US E36 M3

Wow. Almost the identical numbers to the US spec E36 M3 from 95-99

Not the Euro E36 M3, maybe that will be what the 335i will do?

BMW really needs to increase the power on the 335 otherwise the 328 is going to be its biggest rival.

This is with the base 18 inch tire set up. I can imagine that some of the numbers would look even more impressive with the optional staggered 19 inch set up. Not to mention ditching the RFT's all together and adding some Pilot Super Sports or Potenza S-04.

I agree that the 335 needs a power bump (like making the "is" the standard engine specs! either 320 or 330 hp, especially in their heavier cars, 5 series, SUVs...) and then the 335M needs around 360-370 horsepower (assuming the new M3 has around 450).

But that isn't to say the current 335i is dead. Its rated around 4.8 0-60 with rollout compared to 5.5 of the new engine, that is a pretty big difference to most on these boards, especially when you option them the same the difference in price is only around $4K, not a bad price to take 0.7 seconds off your 0-60 time.

the MPG savings will be nice with the i4, but the i6 has become pretty effecient with the new transmission and other fuel saving features.

Audi is the one that should be the most scared, Mercedes has always had a different market, not really performance driven (accept their AMG buyers) but they have always been way behind with performance on normal models, their engines just flat out suck! Audi on the other hand has tried to keep up with BMW and have some nice engines (new S4, TT-RS engines are pretty awesome for MPG and performance), but still not on par with the BMW engines, its like they just can't get as much out of them. At least they are keeping BMW on their toes.

Yet they clearly put the power down, can be rotated and don't weigh as much as stupid 255's. I'd actually be tempted to just toss on a set of aftermarket wheels and 235's in a square setup.

Well, 335i can't have the same BHP as the "4.0". Remember that 640 is delivered with 320 bhp...

I disagree the 335i does not, and in my opinion will not receive a power bump.

A more likely situation would be the introduction of a newer model, which I believe we would most likely see this in the 4 series only (640i being my only reason to believe so).

I don't think by saying 335i, we meant that "that model" needs more power, more that the engine needs more base power in general, if they want to call it the 340i, then so be it...

I also wouldn't doubt that the 4 series gets the 440i (just sounds better than 435i), with the same 320 HP as the 640i, and then in a couple years the sedan gets the upgrade to 340i but will stay at 300 HP and a 335i for a couple of years, sort of like the 330i before the 335i came out.

so what will the 440M have? if not at least 350 HP then it should not be made.

of course unless they change the NAV screen I refuse to buy the new 3 series Hoping the X4 (X4M) has a similar NAV setup to the X3, then I will get that instead of a M3 (hate the added weight but that screen would drive me nuts).

Pretty swift for a four cylinder. Amazing what a little boost can do.

thats impressive, especially out of an I4. I cannot wait to see the coupe, the front end of the car is so aggressive looking. Ill have to drive one but i see no reason to pay the 7k for the 335. Im sure there is a ton more power the I4 could produce and the tuners will have a hayday playing around with it. anyguess? 300whp with a tune?

The only thing that is going to suck is the engine note, especially if an exhaust is added. I would actually rally against an exhaust system for a 4 banger bimmer

as far as audi goes, the new refresh of the a4/a5's and s lines are hidious and have chick written all over them. What a waste of a gorgeous design. IMO audi is going to take all the e90 chicks and BMW will get the men back with the f30/f32. i know a few people that wont buy a e90 bmw because all you see driving them are chicks.

IMO it shouldnt matter, you should buy the car for what it is and how it handles not for the stereotype. Audi IMO isnt running scared, i think its the other way around. 528 cannot run against the new A6.
