I wonder what I will do with that plate holder thing up front. I'll probably get it as well as I live in Hawaii and we have to have plates up front but I wonder more about what to do with it once I go to Europe. The plates are wider there and, of course, I could opt for a US sized plate there but it'll be nicer if I can get rid of it without leaving a mark (then again, you only get US sized plated there if you import a car, so it's pretty unique too.. dangit lol)

I agree with you, I think those marks are for alignment purposes for front plate. Those are marks not holes and I just received my car as it is in the pictures.

Seriously. It's 2012. Why can't they make a god damn "L" bracket that screws in from under the openings on the bumper?

Definitely. I've talked with my CA about it at least 3 times. I'm worried that because I bought in VA they will arbitrarily slap on the plate bracket during prep ( VA requires front plates), but I'm registering the car in my home state of FL (no front plate required). My CA knows this, but I'm still worried about it. That bracket ruins the front of the car, especially if there isn't ever going to be a plate there. I don't want a patch job either - just don't put it on in dealer prep!!!

He tells me he will give me a chrome plate for the front lol, i laughed and said you better have the guys in the back start thinking of something. We both laughed and said its going to be fin when that bridge comes.

They are coming from the BMW VPC's to the dealer with the brackets pre-installed. Dealer prep has nothing to do with it at this point.

Not sure what the deal is, but ALL f30's i have seen are coming with the front eyesore. Dont know if this was done on early production models or what. But in florida, there is no reason to put that shit on.

From the Q&A Sticky above....

Latest status on F30 Front license plate mounting base:
The latest from BMWNA (as of 1/19) is that the first batch of 3 Series Sedans will be delivered to BMW Centers across the US with (but not necessarily attached) the large front license plate bracket shown in some recent photos. That is the reason we see it installed on some recent production cars. [Preproduction cars will still continue to be seen with it of course.]

As of last Thursday however, BMW production facilities have begun manufacturing a new license plate bracket that is smaller than the ones previously seen.

So, this means that some of the very early F30 cars will have the large front license plate base come with the cars, and the others that come after it will have a smaller plate base.

A front license plate holder will not be installed on US bound F30 models. A front license plate holder will be supplied for all cars in case it is bound for a State that requires front license plates. Sorry for any confusion that may have come from our previous posts on the matter. We were relaying what we found out and were told by BMW.

That is the price to be paid for being the first ones to drive f30s.

Seriously, I don't see what the fuss is about that front plate holder. It doesn't and it wouldn't bother me.

Keep the bracket and tell your friends you drive a Porsche. That type of bumper design was common in the 70's etc..

Official Message from BMW USA to dealers on the US mounting plate:

Quote:
From mid-January 2012, the front bumper design has been changed. The permanently-installed base shown above has been eliminated
It goes on to say that 2 holes need to be drilled by the dealer in the bumper for states requiring front plates so the plate can be mounted

It indicates that the dealer has to make the holes to mount the front plate, not the VDC.

So just tell the dealer not to do it for yours

I dont know about that...the cars at my dealer in florida had the front plates and we never put front plates on...i think the bumpers have 2 holes in them and the mount snaps right on...it sounds like the changed the design starting in mid january...my car finished production jan 4th...i must have the initial design that includes 2 small holes in the bumper...

i hope im wrong
