so then, the big question is ... get 335 now and just tune it OR wait for whatever's next? (which will prolly just be n55 w software)

340 would mean an 8-cyl engine 3-series...

if there is any bump in power, it will probably remain a 335i or 336i

but traditionally, x40 is reserve for 8-cyl. engine bmw cars.

I dont see the numbering change so soon... especially the actual and F30 335i are really 3 liters engine, not 3.5 liters.

and so is the 328i, it should really be a 320ti

640i = N55

ya all that rationale went out the window in '07 when they started the 335 ... you dont see a relationship btw L and badge #'s anymore period

this is a bad simile - the difference between DSLR and SLR is digital medium. I suppose you could say that a MT is more like 'manual exposure' vs automatic mode. Unless you plan to heel-toe around the track, or rev the motor at stoplights, I expect equal fun can be had with either transmission

I like the shifting pattern on the auto. Almost useless to get a manual.

I don't know if anyone else noticed but the tachometer programming in
most of the new 'F' bodies seem to respond before the engine does, making the shifts 'look' like they're quicker than they are. for example, as you hit the paddle to downshift the computer 'knows' where the tach will be in the next gear and it shows the new RPM before the engine reaches it. Not sure if I like this yet, kind of takes away from knowing exactly what your car is doing.

Why would you do that? Same tuners will have a tune for the 335 that will literally leave their own chipped 328 in the dust. And just because it's a 4-banger don't mean it will get killer gas mileage. The worst gas mileage I've ever experienced on any of my cars was on a modified 4-banger: try 8-10 mpg when driven hard. I have to drive like a granny to achieve 23-24 mpg on my stock '12 GTI, and this is one of the most efficient turbocharged engines out there.

That would be awesome
3 series triple turbo diesel with 7MPG
Just like the 640d who does 64MPG
