Good luck packing stuff for 2 adults and 2 children for a weekend trip in a F30... I do this all the time in my e92...
Based on the press images it looks like those arms go behind the trunk trim and do not intrude into the storage compartment.

It's a big image so I didn't paste it here.

whoa! stunning sports line in alpine white.

and those angel eyes are really bright! I remember seeing a coupe with these at night and you don't need to turn your HID's with these corona rings on.

It's good that the hinge arms won't intrude on the storage, but it's still an unfortunate cost savings measure.

Building the sixth generation of the BMW 3 Series thus benefits, for example, from a new large press. At 17 strokes per minute, this installation counts among the most advanced in the world. It achieves throughput of 600 tonnes of steel per day and develops press forces of 650 to 2,500 tonnes. In a matter of 12 days, then, this high-performance facility processes a similar amount of steel as went into the construction of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The new production infrastructure also ensures the highest possible economy of space and optimal material flows. Beyond that, the high-tech press enables an improvement in quality and efficiency.
I saw these new presses about to come online when I took the factory tour on 10/17. They definitely looked more advanced that the models they were using for E90 production.

We saw an F30 going through paint last week, but all other cars were E90/E91. Nice to see they finally started production on the F3x series!

I see something near the trunk arm in the pic with the guy working on it posted above that looks like a motor...is the trunk self opening/closing on the F30? maybe that's why they switched the support system around.

Here's a close cropped shot of the trunk arm area:

I went to Spartanburg, SC to take a tour of the factory. At that time, they were only manufacturing X5 and Z4s in the US. The experience was incredible. The cartesian robotics they use is absolutely mind-blowing. The robots literally fling the entire chassis around.

The car looks amazing in these pics. I never noticed the hood line until now and I cannot unsee it! It does look out of place now

Yeah, in the press release, it states that the trunk automatically opens up when you stand behind it. It has a sensor that detects the presence of your feet below the bumper.

From the press release:

Innovative boot access makes life a little easier.

BMW ConnectedDrive has come up with another convenience-enhancing feature: the hands-free boot lid opening function – available for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan in conjunction with Comfort Access – is a first in the premium class. Standing behind the car, customers can prompt the boot to open with just a short movement of their foot under the centre of the rear bumper, i.e. without using their hands. The boot then automatically unlocks and swings open by spring force. The vehicle is fitted with sensors placed at different heights in the rear bumper trim, which are able to identify a person standing behind the vehicle. The sensors can identify the foot “command” by monitoring the area of the leg between the shin and the tip of the foot. They then send a signal containing special algorithms to the on-board computer. Access is only authorised, however, if the system simultaneously identifies the Comfort Access control unit (the key), which the person must be carrying with them. The boot lid is then unlocked and raised automatically, without hand contact. Key authorisation provides the safeguard ensuring correct operation at all times.

That is pretty cool - I wonder what it will be like in the real world. I like the spring loaded idea though.

Yeap, it's finally self opening.

Same as with the 5-series (without automatic close option), you push the button and the springs open the trunk. There's no e-motor involved.

Best regards,
south
