Yup. I have one CST transmitter and one CSRB receiver (remember to get the battery powered version) for my 580EX. Works great! Fires consistently without any misfires. I've heard the chinese crap on ebay works for the first couple weeks and then dies, misfires, doesn't fire when you want it to, etc.

I always planned on doing something macro related if i ever won, but i strongly doubt we'll see that day. so hopefully someone else will pick up that idea.

I figure the photographer knew they were making a video and didn't shoot full quality, thus fitting lots more photos on each card and saving battery life.

as for the camera setup, probably purchased the seat, then gave a big tip to the in flight staff to just ignor the camera sitting there.

Perhaps some more details...

If given a whole row to themselves in a flight from San Francisco to Paris, most people would just sleep. Not this passenger, who set up his Canon 5D Mark II digital SLR camera on a tripod and attached a timelapse controller.

When he pointed his 16mm-to-35mm lens out his airplane window, the result was this remarkable timelapse video of his 11-hour flight.
Taking that Great Circle route above the polar regions, the video flies us through the aurora borealis, giving us a look at those spectacular northern lights.

Also remarkable is the fact that the Air France flight crew allowed the use of that bundle of electronic devices throughout the entire flight. At the end of this video, you'll see the rig with which he snapped the 2,459 shots -- one approximately every two miles. After the flight, they were edited together along with a few judiciously placed iPhone pics shot along the way.

By the way, you don't even need to be flying that far north to see the northern lights -- once on a night flight from Montréal to Detroit, I could see the aurora borealis out of the right side of the plane during the entire trip.

So here's a question for you photogs...

What's the best lens you recommend specifically for portraits, and why?

I like my 50mm 1.8 with my flash aimed at the room, have gotten some great shots with it.

but i haven't experienced too many supposed "portrait" lenses beyond all my zooms and my 100mm prime to really compare.

For portraits I shoot with Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G and 80-200mm f/2.8. I like the soft background bokeh it produces at wide open f stops and the sharpness of the subjects

here's my 50mm F1.8 on my old T1i before i got rid of it, so it's equivilent to 80mm

it isn't obviously shot in portait, but will give you an idea of what that lens is like as a portait non the less.
