He said several things that should hold some appeal to Republicans, and other things that should appeal to Democrats. He also said some things that will likely not appeal to one or the other group.
I liked some of what he had to say. But how likely is his rhetoric to become reality that resembles the words that were spoken? We will see. I am glad he pulled back from the fringe liberal "ideals". I wonder if he will go back to that emphasis after tonight. All in all, I would say, "Not bad". It was definitely nothing to inspire. And his delivery was rather flat. But I never have regarded him as any great speaker. I guess I should not wonder why the press sees him as their darling. It says as much about the press as it does about Mr. Obama.

I could agree with nearly all that Rep. Paul Ryan had to say in the Republican response. But like my skepticism of Mr. Obama's words, I doubt that even most of the Republican representatives would actively work toward moving on these principles. I suspect that too many of them are just into damage control to find a way to get the U.S. to the next leg of a larger federal government. Paul Ryan came across as believing the words he spoke, where Mr. Obama seemed to be biting his tongue.
