Two BC drivers lose their cars after being caught street racing
I just read a case where two drivers actually lost their cars, for good, after being caught street racing in Britsh Columbia, Canada. They were racing a Ferrari vs a BMW M6 on the streets of Vancouver.
http://www.automonster.ca/?p=1666 It's obvious these guys had a need for speed...LOL! Personally I don't think the government should have the right to seize cars on a first offence of street racing. I don't know the particulars of the case, however I think it is extreme punishment. A massive fine, driving suspension and insurance hike can usually slow someone down without actually taking ownership of the cars in question. |

I find that a little on the harsh side, but if this law was well known and they still did it, they have no one to blame but themselves. Plus with these guys being so young, I would assume the real punishment happened after they told their folks.
The old addage(sp?) applies here "If you can't do the time, Don't do the crime"

This law isn't well known. This is the first case of this in the province. By no means do I think those guys are anything but stupid shits for doing what they did, however this is another example of how BC has become nothing more then a socialist police state. BC has the most strict laws on the dumbest shit in this whole country. I am so glad I moved away from there.
Oh, not to mention the extremely low drunk driving limit which is the lowest tolerance in the country also. Sorry for the rant, I just get pissed when I think about what they are doing to destroy my home province. |

Stating opinion: It was childish to race, and stupid to get caught (time & location) They obviously had the resources to afford a track day bad judgment = they don't deserve to keep the Ferrari / M6 |

They have no one to blame but themselves. They essentially did get a massive fine, apparently about 20% of the price of the car.
The law is rather harsh, but going 125 mph on the roads as described certainly sounds like stupidity. They are fortunate that the police are giving them some of the proceeds to pay off the loans on the cars.

doing 200 in a 60 zone.
Some harsh punishment of some sort is warranted. The Ferrari driver was not even the owner. Who lets his Ferrari being driven by somebody else anyway? An 85K M6? In what part of Canada can you buy a new M6 for 85K? ![]()

BC had the lowest tolerance blood-alcohol levels (.05 - one drink and you're done) revoked recently.
Vancouver's downtown restaurants, bars and clubs got together and was able to complain loudly enough to have it reversed back to the .08 level it was b4. Between that and the new 12% HST (tax), they were going out of business. But I agree... this place has turned into a Socialist nightmare with every aspect of your life being monitored by ridiculously tight constraints/laws

Speedo barely hit the 11 o'clock position...
First off I am not condoning this behaviour, however hitting "almost 200km/h as the cop reported" in a Ferrari Scuderia barely hits the 11 o'clock position on the speedo.
In most cars the speedo would have been buried in the 4 o'clock position at 200 km/h. It could have been a lack of experience (22 year old driver), where he didn't realize just how fast he was going. The car is capable of double that speed. I imagine he reached 200 km/h quickly. ![]() I still believe cops should not be taking ownership of cars where an owner is caught speeding; it's not the right thing to do. There are many other things that could be done to slow someone down (i.e. heavy fines, demerit points, driving suspensions, etc.) |

My point is not that the drivers weren't careless and wreckless, as no one can deny that. The point is what right do the cops have to take ownership of the vehicles that don't belong to them.
What if the cars were rentals, and the drivers were just renting them for the day from an exotic car rental company? Could the government take ownership of them then. That wouldn't make sense, however is no different than them taking ownership of any car that they didn't pay for. |

Actually, although TK-421 tone is condescending and rude I kind of agree with him that a jail sentence for the drivers would be a better deterrent than taking their cars away from them. Apparently, if they have access to financial resources that allow them to drive Ferraris and M6s then I don't see how they cannot in the near future drive again the same car types that they were driving without learning a damn thing.
Some jail time being somebody else's bitch might prove more efficient. ![]()

If the police only did the right thing, there wouldn't be any funds to pay their salaries.

There's no reason they shouldn't get both jail and confiscation/fine. In these types of extreme cases the cars can be viewed as weapons so why would anyone expect to get them back? Now that's not to say they couldn't just buy them back at auction or something (to do what with if you've lost your license?), but hitting people in the wallet can deter some people. Obviously, if they didn't own the cars then that owner may also have some liability and it's just a matter of how much. Jail time is what should hurt most, however.
