The ignorance at how great a 4 cylinder engine can be is fairly astonishing. The twin turbo 4 cylinder diesel in the 1er is a cracking engine and will blow away any Golf Gti or most american V6 sedans.

After all, american engines are notorius for extracting nack all bhp from 8 cylinders.

Look outside your shores. Most of europe can' be wrong....

(all this from a guy driving a 4.0 v8)

The problem with an I4 engine isn't necessarily the output but the sound and the refinement. Every car I have ever driven with a 4 cylinder engine has had significant coarseness throughout the powerband and, frankly, they all sound god awful. The turbo I4 I had in my B6 A4 was awful and the new B8 2.0Ts are just as bad. I've never driven a 4 cylinder BMW but unless they put in a ton of dampeners or whatever I doubt they will be able to eliminate the coarse feeling that is inherent in an I4 or produce a sound that is anywhere near as pleasant as an I6.

I'm sure someone will come around here and say something about the WRX or the Evo and those are indeed great cars with phenomenal power output...but they still sound like crap to me!

I agree an I4 will never be as smooth as an i6, and an i6 vs a V8 vs a V12 etc etc, but the 320d is an amazing engine and will probably go down a storm in the US if people can look at the benefits.

It is widely known that BMW regret brining the 335d to the US and wish they had brought a 330d instead. 95% of the peformance and shove, but no weird urea system. The 330d engine is probably the best real world compormise out there.

IMHO the 335d in Europe didn't have the urea system either. That was added to conform to clean diesel laws here. Why wouldn't they add the urea system to the 330d if they brought that over here too?

THe 335d has no urea system in Europe, infact, neither do any other BMW diesel models. However, I was lead to believe that the LCI 330d 241bhp engine meets the US emissions requirements without need for a urea system.

Everyone around here bashing the 4cylinder....when as far back as the E12/E30, they were being produced as a 318 model...a 2l 4 cylinder. M42 engines are surprisingly strong and take well to forced induction. And with Obama trying to push for 60mpg rules by 2025 and gas prices on the rise again, I wouldn't mind rocking a 4 cylinder diesel.
