N53 NA 3 liter in the new F30

Does anyone now when BMW will add valvetronic in the direct injected N53 na 3 liter. As we know they have done it to the N55 turbo. Also as a follow up, will this engine be added to the upcoming new 3 series. The excuse in the past was that our higher suplfur content fuel was the problem, we now know many others have direct injected cars in the US, they just cannot run in the lean burn stratified mode.

I'd be highly surprised if a NA I6 will even be offered on the F30. I hope there is but I'm not holding my breath. I4 TT ftl.

why?
Better performace
more power and torque
Why would you not want this?

Dont say something dumb like a 4cyl should not be in a 45k car because that makes no sense. You can blame the administration for this also not BMW.

I personally hate the sound of 4-cylinders, even turbo ones. Yes I know they have superior low end torque, but I'd rather have an engine that sounds nice and makes me want to rev it up to redline. Also I have yet to drive a I4 that is as smooth as an I6.

But yes this was caused by the stupid government regulations. I don't plan to buy an I4 until there are no more I6 or V6's available on the market in this car segment.

Better keep your current car then, even the new M cars will be turbo.

Yes I know that. It sucks but BMW really can't do anything about it. NA engines are naturally less efficient. And they won't be able to survive with the future fuel economy restrictions. It's depressing to think about the future of cars. But I'll just wait and see what happens.

Don't get too depressed, it is possible to make a turbo engine that appears to be as crisp and direct as NA, just like if you compare the VANOS on the M54 to N54, the N54 shifts timing practically seamlessly, where with the M54 you can actually feel the changes in the torque curve. It just takes some time and R&D.

I am still dreaming about a fully hydraulic valve train in a cam-less engine. Now that would be something.

No its not. I thought this way too during the 70s with the gas issues then, and was worried there would no longer be fast cars like camaros and stuff, but sure enough, cars are faster than ever now.

The right exhaust will make it sound great, dont be worried

Not sure how old you are, but some of us remember the days when you couldn't see half a mile in LA due to the smog from cars. Those cars got 12 miles to the gallon, had no seat belts, few other safety features and did 0-60 in about 10 seconds. When society decided it had had enough of that, government set standards for industry to meet and guess what, they did. Technologies improved, cars got cleaner, safer, more fuel efficient AND FASTER. Today's econoboxes run almost as fast as some late 60's muscle cars and get nearly three times the gas mileage. I am not here to defend government, but sometimes they actually do some things that benefit us all.

I'd look at the new CAFE regulations as a challenge that BMW and other car manufacturers will have to meet. There were all kinds of back room discussions before the new standards were set and the car makers got some concessions in the form of eliminating the separate California regs. They never would have signed up for this if they didn't think they could meet them. And finally, they are "corporate average" regulations. Companies can still build Vipers, Corvettes, and M3s as long as they build enough other stuff to meet the average. I wouldn't sweat this too much.
