I had a 318is, that engine was rough but the mileage was a beautiful thing.
I have an STi now, The engine is pretty smooth, cause of the boxer design. Mileage isn't great, but I didn't buy the car for good mileage. City i get about 17-18, highway around 25-26

Pick up this most recent issue of Bimmer. There's some interesting information on their new engine/exhaust manifold design utilizing a the scroll Turbo. btw..I'm 90% there on buying a TDI once my lease is up. |

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showpos...&postcount=342 Or you can find the full version at the watermarked site... it breaks down the new manifolds and ccm in the new ///M motor (which will also used in other production models.) Or for the N55? |

What a lot of people don't realise is that globally, BMW sell more 4cyl based cars than anything else. Those of you that put down the 4cyl cars are pure ignorant and should reserve your comments till you get to drive one. Any comparisions to an 4cyl E36 or E46 is also irrellivant as the current crop is nothing like them. I have now had 2 in my E90's and these things are just as silky smooth as an I6. They don't have power that throw you back in in your seat but they are great cars.

Wasn't trying to be ignorant. Let me explain my self.. Seems like 4 cylinders are either underpowered, have ridiculous power bands that hit at random rpms... (not smooth), and are accompanied by mediocore MPGs (For some of the higher output turbo cars) This just doesn't sound like any attribute to the "Ultimate Driving Machine" I would like to see smooth refined power out of a 4 banger, good gas millage, and linear power similar to that we experience with our I-6's |

This is my prediction on what BMW has in the works for upcoming engines...
4 cylinder 2.0-2.5l twin turbo 6 cylinder 3.0l single turbo (this will be the N55 which will eventually replace the current N54) 6 cylinder 3.5-3.6l twin turbo - specifically for the new M3

There is no significant $ saving gain to go with a 4-cyl. turbo.
This is all BS to please people who don't care to count for real. Any idea of the cost of a turbo? *Not cheap*. http://www.caranddriver.com/features...sizing-feature ![]()

Not sure how I feel about this. Seems fundamentally wrong, but maybe it's for the best. I trust BMW's engineers will make it a great car regardless though.

I'm pretty stoked about this actually. The 4 banger should weigh less than the current 6 obviously and with the turbos it should have a good powerband if they tune it right (keep it somewhat rev happy but boost torque downlow).
You guys complain about BMW's all being heavy... which I agree with... but this is one step to making them not as heavy and you all complain lol... I like the idea of a 4 banger 1 series to fling around an autox.

Of course, the Audi does significantly better than the 328xi in terms of fuel economy - 25MPG combined versus 20MPG combined, per the EPA. |

Please. I wouldn't take observed fuel economy numbers from the leadfoots at Car and Driver to the bank any sooner than I'd take observed 1/4 mile times reported by the hardcore hypermilers at Cleanmpg.com. Give me numbers from people who drive like normal people in normal traffic.

BTW, the A4 2.0T has a real FULL PRESSURE DIRECT INJECTION, the N52 in the 328i NOT. Bring the 2008+ European 330i with FULL PRESSURE DIRECT INJECTION and you'll get the same or better mileage as the A4 2.0T. Proof; A4 2.0T 7-speed auto. 211HP 9.3 / 6.3 / Combined 7.4L/100km Euro 330i Step 272HP 10.2 / 5.9 / Combined 7.4L/100km. Basically the same overall mpg figure for 60HP more *WITHOUT* turbo. 4- cyl. turbo or not ----> ![]()
