I looked under my front seats after reading this thread and notice that there's a crevice towards the front where one carpet overlaps the other. It's possible to loose things into that crevice as well, although one could always pull back the carpet but PITA. I don't think that's the air vent as that's towards the rear, I guess for warm air to warm the rear passenger's feet?
