The 330D doesn't feel as fast because peak torque is greater in the 335D That's all we feel as humans. Yes, the pure timing figures are in the 30D's favour but that's just gearing. The 35D always had more area under the curve and that's what makes a car feel quick ... but only just

The difference in the torque is less than 4% though (560 vs 580); which surely wouldn't be a noticeable/perceivable difference? Is it also that the 35d has that torque over a larger rev range?

I know what you mean about torque; my 135i never felt as fast as my old 335d (original slower one) I guess for that reason! But with such a small difference in torque, and a faster 0-60 (at least 0.5sec quicker than my 335d), I was expecting it to still feel at least as quick as the 335d

Torque figures...

E90 335d
580Nm (427 lbs-ft) 1750-2250 rpm .... difference of 500

F30 330d
560Nm (413 lbs-ft) 2000-2750 rpm .... difference of 750

No idea what that means in the real world... It appears the 335d only has 14 lbs-ft more - now that aint a lot.
Also looks like the 330d should feel as quick as it holds on to its torque for longer - but it does come at later revs?

I think you would need to compare both graphs for that. Anyone seen an F30 330d graph?

The 35D just comes in harder and faster. That's what you "feel" And in "normal" driving, there is more area under the curve for the 35D. You don't need graphs for that, the figures tell you what you need to know.

Engine wise the F30 330D rules in the 2100 - 3000RPM rev range, but then it's single turbo runs out of puff.

The 335D with it's twin turbo rules in the upper rev range.

I suspect the 8speed F30 box keeps the 330D in the frame.

I am very very interested in a Turbo re-build nice machined compressor (slightly bigger of course), inconel exhaust wheel. .....that will extend the torque curve in the upper range
