I have some Russian music on my ipod. Itunes and the ipod displays the Russian characters. My car has the Tech package, so enhanced bluetooth, navi, etc. The idrive displays the Russian perfectly without changing any settings. It's just displaying what the ipod has. I don't see why Chinese would be any different.

However, in the 128i without navi/ idrive that I had as a loaner, it would only bring up asterisks when my Russian music came on... Hope that helps...

Hong Kong/Macau/China & Taiwan have specific part numbers for CIC, & only those markets can display Chinese fonts.
Russian is different cos the Cyrillic script is one of the 3 official EU scripts (after Latin & Greek).

The new professional navi system will not be on 2013 F30 except for Active Hybird and 5 series which build after Nov 2012.

There is a post on it about this new system. I own several BMW and it is a bummer that it doesn't display any chinese characters. The old Exx radio does display it on the Amber matrix screen along with Mini. It is sad but I guess the new system will do that now.

VW, Audi, MBenz has been able to display other characters long ago before BMW does that.

I've spent 2 weeks trying to make idrive show chinese languages through coding but no luck...
the option to set it to chinese through coding is there. but the font doesnt not exist in the system and it cannot display chinese.
another thing is the CIC system in asia countries have a different part number than the rest of the world.
the 5 series can code and display chinese is the cluster underneath speedo and taco but still cant display on idrive, no luck for F30s.

sucks for me since i only listen to chinese music and all i get are squares so i dont even know what songs im listening to. and i refuse to change over 10 k songs to english manually lol

lol, bimmerretrofit is selling a NBT retrofit kit for $1899.99; you can probably upgrade your stock non-iDrive to that and your problem will be solved.

I think NBT uses the same CIC screen and controller so if they would sell me the NBT head unit for $1000 or cheaper, I'll try it!

We'll probably have to wait and see how the MY2014s turn out before thinking about this.

I have a feeling you'll be able to code it to read Chinese characters on NBT but not make the menus Chinese.

I am sure NBT has native UTF8 display support and all the fonts embedded - that is how the system should be architected in the first place. I have friends with NBT in the UK with BMW apps using douban.fm nicely. For CIC, BMW deliberately removed the CJK support from the QNX system in order to make 2 streams of the unit and sold it differently (if you look on the catalogue you see CIC for China and Hong Kong has a different serial than the ones in US/EU)

It sucks.
