Same thing happened to me today. The car lost power while I was driving in Comfort mode. Turning the car off and then back on fixed the issue.
Should I take it to the dealer or hope that it will never happen again?

Will do, thanks. I am just afraid that the dealer won't do anything unless I can show the problem to them. Hopefully there is an error code or something along these lines that got recorded when this happened.

No problem. There were fault codes in my case.

Pure swap. A substitution of collateral.

Mine goes in for the second time tomorrow for limp mode--fan replaced once a month ago. I haven't bitched about the squealing brakes yet, plus I have the dreaded rusty seats.
Other than that, I love the car. ![]()

Yeah, I can see why you're conflicted about getting another one. I don't know. If you're leasing maybe go ahead and give the S4 a try, and hopefully BMW will finally get the 3 series right in the next couple years. Any interest in the ATS? Of course, it too is a new model, and will likely have teething issues. C class has received good reviews in terms of driving experience. That's another great alternative if you want to stay with German. If your buying instead of leasing, then I'd have the dealer and/or BMW throw in the extended 6yr/100k warranty for your troubles, and to help keep the fear of long term ownership a bit less concerning. Good luck. Let us know what you decide. |

I just encountered the same problem twice within my first 3 weeks of getting my car. The first time I brought it in they kept the car for a couple days and determined it was the electronic fan that needed replacing. They did the change, I got the car back and three days later the problem came back. BMW is now further instigating and needs at least a week they say since they still can't figure it out after 3 days. I doubt it's a hardware issue since the problem goes away after restarting the car. Sounds like a software issue but I'll see what they come up with next week......

Has the 328i had any similar faults? I can't imagine the two (not too different) engines have different fans do they?

I had the same thing happen.
It was just a limp mode, no codes, no nothing. I turned the car off for a little while and it restarted fine. It probably happened a month ago now... I guess I'll make an appt at the dealer.

So I guess I'm joining the club on this one. Driving home after getting my summer tires swapped at the BMW dealer, I had a sudden loss of power. The car wouldn't speed up past 4th gear, although engine sounded as if the transmission was stuck on 1st gear.. Tried shifting down gear which made no difference. I was driving on Sport mode and switch back between comfort, eco, back to comfort, and sport. Nothing... After pissing everyone off in the road, I pulled over. Shut off the car and it seemed to fix it. I drove around the house and couldn't replicate the issue. Any idea on how to check for fault codes and what should I look for? I would to take it to the dealer, but I'm currently living in Germany with a U.S. specs car. I'm sure I'll have a hard time with the language barrier, trying to explain the issue... The car is just at 3,000 miles, very disappointing...

1) Launch C:\EDIABAS\Bin\TOOL32.EXE 2) Hit F3 3) Load C:\EDIABAS\Ecu\F01.PRG 4) In the "Select Job: F01" window, select FS_LOESCHEN_FUNKTIONAL 5) Hit F5 6) "Results" window should show "JOB_STATUS = OKAY" Hopefully, Problem Solved. Note: fs_lesen_funktional only read fault codes, FS_LOESCHEN_FUNKTIONAL will delete it.
