I am riding in the snow in my summer performance tires. They stick just as well as the all seasons on my g37. Unless you are in some area with tons of snow it seems you don't even need all seasons with x drive

Lol, so be it, the car is driving well and I trust BMW knew what they were doing when they used this set up. I am curious to know what the guy in Canada who has an S4 and the m sport with the 19s is observing. Although up there the law may require him to use winter tires

i'm not sure how much snow you guys see over in NJ but my 335xi was sliding all over the slippery roads before i had a chance to get it into the shop for winters.

That said i was on the 19" staggered wheels along with the summer performance RFT's so i'm not entirely sure how much grip you would've been getting with your all seasons.

Bottom line it boils down to grip, maybe in your weather all season's are fine, but in other areas which see more snow and slippery conditions winter tires are an absolute must.

Also i believe there is a misconception out there that AWD means you dont neccessarily need winter tires, that is a very dangerous mentality to go on. Regardless of drive train layout grip will always be the number 1 factor for stopping, accelerating and cornering in slippery conditions.

This is one of the reasons most of the cars off of the road in snowy conditions is an AWD.

The driver simply fails to understand that grip is determined by the tires, not the driveline. Once moving, the AWD driver on inappropriate tires is no better off than a two-wheel drive car with the same tires.

Wait that's the exact set up I have. We got an inch of snow and I drove with no issues. I will admit stopping was an issue but I was not traveling at high speeds. How much snow did you get.

I think we have to be cAreful here, if you are getting a lot more snow than we have seen this winter in NJ then winters are a must. But for keeping up with traffic and driving at manageable speeds then from my experience so far the oem 19 staggered tires are holding up just fine. Things may change once we get more snow.

I got caught in a decent snow storm before I got my winters on. Xdrive with staggered summers performed better than I expected but I definitely felt like I was pushing my luck. Ended up turning around before it got worse and took it to the house. Now with winters I've had no issues at all...eb2 snow plow.

Exactly, seems you were managing too but agreed with more snow it may get tricky, the same can be said about the civics and corollas on all seasons out there. I actually like this setup because you don't push your luck and drive in a sane way. You should see the range rover guys when in snows, what they don't realize is you cannot stop that truck when it snows. I see the same thing in my x5 with all seasons, it's very capable but due to weight it takes a bit longer to stop

Again here we seem to be missing the point. If the fwd with all seasons are managing is it not possible that the driveline is what's enabling me to drive this car with staggered summer tires. Spoken differently would a 335i with the same tires and no awd keep up with the fwd corrollas, i doubt. Nobody is saying drive it like its stolen to prove a point. Just keep up with the corollas.

You have no concept of winter driving whatsoever. A car with all season takes 30 ft longer to stop than same car on winters. On summers you are a liability on the road. Troll.

AWD is enabling acceleration in a straight line. AWD does not help at all with traction, cornering or stopping. You are at the mercy of summer tires.

Strange discussion. This article, for example, suggests only about 40% of Canadians own and use snow tires.

Maybe more should, but claims that the 60% of the people without them are idiots, a danger to the public, and should stay off the roads sounds puerile, as BMW drivers are often characterized as being. Driving within the limits of the car and road can accommodate most conditions.
