DIY - Exhaust flap mod (Golf Tee)
First of all let me thank 1.fresh.f30.335 for providing some directions oh how to do this.
Step 1: Get tools together; flat head screw driver and wire. I bought this for like $4 because i couldn't find any wire and this came with wire. Step 2: Look at the spring that we need to remove. Step 3: Get flat head screw driver and place between spring and exhaust. Now twist and spring should fly depending on how big your screw driver is. ![]() Step 4: attack from other angle to repeat the above step for the end of spring which is attached to motor. Step 5: After Spring is removed twist the knob spring was attached to on exhaust side to open flap. look down tailpipe with flashlight to verify. Step 6: run wire through the grove and tie around exhaust. ![]() I also used some of the exhaust bandage from that package I bought to cover some of that wire.

To force the exhaust flap open for a louder exhaust note. Stand outside your car while somebody starts it - you'll hear it loud at first, then a clang as the flat closes and the exhaust'll be much quieter. The noise doesn't seem to make it into the cabin much, though.

Full on throttle is the same since flap would have been open anyway.

this is a great mod, on my current car its a 10 seconds process of unplugging the rubber hose...bmw likes to complicate modding

Theres really no reason at all to rig a wire to your new bmw.
You you just unplug the connector of the valve while the car is OFF it will leave it open. A lot cleaner and easier then rigging wire. |

yeh the only reason I did this way is because unplugging will show a code at service.

So i did this. And after i did it. Apparently it wasnt tight enough, so there was movement down there. so i went back down to redo it. as i was taking off the wire to re-secure it again, i noticed that the too wouldnt line up if i decided to put the spring back in there. does the motor turn a bit more without the spring then it does with the spring (im guessing spring holds it back from going all the way) since there a grove in inside the exhaust to prevent the flap from going further then allowed.
If i look at the motor side if i were to put the spring on that side it wouldnt go in, the top of the spring wouldnt fit due to the bracket that holds the motor. Can someone check to see if there is like that too? Has anyone tried to put the spring back?
