All this talk about the 330d M-sport...anyone in the UK getting the 335i?

Hardly any mention of what must be a superb car. A model that in the E9* range was often the choice of the enthusiast, and/or a 'filler' between the 330i and an M3.

Anyone waiting for the coupe before getting the 335i engine?

Any views?

Not me for sure!

It might have a creamy engine, but its fuel comsumption would be awful especially in London and, in real world terms, it's no faster. In fact, mid-range acceleration is much worse. Besides, all Petrol F30s have a higher drag coefficient than their Diesel counterparts.
Now, I do like my 'drag' levels to be as low as possible.

Previous post corrected for clarity!

Petrol versions of the F30 have a greater drag coefficient. Check the BMW configurator.

Cd 330d = 0.28, Cd 335i = 0.30
Cd 320d = 0.27, Cd 320i = 0.29, Cd 328i = 0.29

Are those figures correct, as there have been some errors on the site?

I've not checked BMW press release data on the specifics, but have seen contradictions and thought some of these figures are odd.

The differences also apply to the '5' Series as shown on the Configurator. Diesel Cd lower than Petrol Cd.

BMW list the same figure for the F11 520d, 530d, 535d and 535i, so not a petrol vs. diesel thing as such.

Wonder how the F30 is so different with the same frontal area and panel designs. Could it be the flaps? Not a bit of trickery is it, on whether open or closed?

Need to do a bit of research on this.

Searching on the web I've come across several websites that all say the F30 has a drag coefficient of 0.26 Cd. Which is lower than all those figures!

Yeah but those are usually the early wind tunnel results on skinny wheeled models. Most manufacturers post those in the launch blurb.

Sorry, that's not correct.

From the Car Configurator:

520d EfficientDynamics Cd = 0.27
520d, 530d, 535d Cd = 0.28
528i, 535i Cd = 0.29
550i Cd = 0.30

So it is a Petrol vs Diesel difference. Possibly due to a different and more aerodynamic engine undertray.

My guess is that petrol engines(higher revving) need more cooling, so need more air in around the engine thus more drag...I could be talking bol*****s too though !

Petrol combustion process involves higher temps and higher EGT's, so probably requires a more exposed exhaust pipe.

Which configurator are you using? I'm using BMW UK, and ALL the engines I quoted are the same drag factor on that site. I've just double checked what I was reading last evening and I confirm the models are listed as the same.

520d, 530d, 535d and 535i F11 M-sport Tourings. So NOT a petrol vs. diesel factor in this instance.

Pete, he is talking about figures for the saloon and they are correct for the saloon. I've just had a quick look and

535d = 0.28

If you are talking about the tourer then yes, they are 0.31 for both the above engines in the tourer.

Yes I see the difference, and wasn't disputing other models. I had listed the F11 as my example, which figures are from BMW, to illustrate it doesn't appear to be simply a fuel type factor.

So we have different figures, across model combinations, but in the F11 example for 6-cylinder engines (I could have added the 530i) there is no difference. There has to be more to it than just saying it is fuel type.

The reason for me picking the F11, I have the 535i and was wanting to see where the 6-cylinder diesels fit against my car. The fact a 520d is the same drag factor did surprise me, as I initially thought 'petrol' or big engine cooling, but that can't be it.

Still needs some research to have the reasons why some models will be different, but others not.

As this is a '3' Series Forum, I was looking at this Series and specifically the Saloon Version (and also for the '5' Series) as I am buying a Saloon.

All '3' Series Diesel Tourers have a Cd of 0.31.
The '3' Series Petrol Tourer (328i) has a Cd of 0.32.
Again Cd for Petrol Version higher than Cd for Diesel Version for the '3' Series.

Tourers are less aerodynamic than their Saloon equivalents and have a 10%+ higher Drag Coefficient.

If I were choosing now I'd still take the 330d in preference to the 335i. Considering they're so close in performance, the diesel seems much better value, you just lose the sound of that 6cyl petrol engine.

Wouldn't be surprised if the 330d isn't eating the 335i's lunch in terms of UK sales.

I looked really hard at the 335i, but given I'm doing a contract lease through my business (small humble business at that), BIK was a big factor and put the 335i out of the running.

There was a premium of maybe £60/month for the petrol, reflecting lower residuals, but I'd have swallowed that happily if it wasn't for the tax.

Sadly, I never got to drive an F30 335i - I've had a few petrol six BMWs over the years and I miss the gorgeous sound.

My sales guy said he'd driven both 335i & 330d and that the 330d was faster on the road because of all the torque. Not sure that would hold out if the 335i driver was using all the revs, but I did love the effortlessness of the 330d.

Has anyone driven the 335i? If it's wonderful, please don't tell me, or at least post it on another forum ...
