Morning guys, requesting pictures of aftermarket winter tyre/wheel packages. After my last BMW experience (E90 Coupe) I'm considering winter tyres. Read a lot about the cost of 19's being nearly as much as Spain's deficit and also not that practical because of the width

These Team Dynamics Pro-Sports with 245/18/45 dunlop winters will go straight onto my new 330D M Sport touring and look great with the brake upgrade.

About £2K all in, the wheels are 8.5" all round, should look good.

What's the view of you guys on whether this is needed nowadays?

There is a massive difference for winter driving on dedicated winter/cold weather tyres as conditions deteriorate.

I run them both for improved driving safety on ice/black ice and of course snow. But for general driving in sub 7-degree conditions winter tyres typically work better than a high performance summer tyre.

Seems to be a controversial opinion but perhaps xdrive is the future. I know a lot of countries with high amounts of snow swear by it on stock tyres. Personally never been convinced about specific argument for winter tyres in UK but personal choice.

For me it has nothing to do with traction in snow, it is the safety of having tyres that work better in cold wet conditions like we have from November to Feb. Stopping distances are much shorter.

1. xDrive + winter tyres (best)
2. RWD + winter tyres
3. xDrive + all season
4. RWD + all season (worst)

Yes, that's the way it works.

Even worse the xDrive on HP summer tyres, which basically is no different than your standard RWD on HP summer tyres. Just a little more traction, in adverse conditions, but certainly no more control or braking ability.

Will depend on what are the stock tyres. If All-season are fitted then xDrive is better than RWD on summer tyres, but put a RWD with winter tyres against xDrive and All seanon and the RWD is the better and safer car to drive on black ice, slush and snow.


For me, the worst driving situation is to have an AWD vehicle behind me in adverse conditions. I'm on winter tyres and have the ability to brake in the shortest distances. The average AWD driver seems to think they are invinvible in winter conditions, because they have a 4x4, think nothing of how it is tyres that makes the safer vehicle, drive too fast, too close and can't brake any better than the 2WD car. Are just as liable to have accidents or find the ditch... as they do. Unless they have winter tyres.

All-season tyres are a compromise, neither best for performance summer driving, or the best for winter conditions. Even with an xDrive saloon or touring, to get the best from it through the seasons you still need two sets of wheels, HP summer and cold weather/winter tyres.

An xDrive on HP summer tyres (like most X3 and X5 vehicles in the UK on their 'sport' wheel sets) will have very little advantage over a RWD car, just a little more traction, but nothing more in the conditions folks think AWD is the business.

Are you after keeping with OEM options for your model? Someone like Alloy Wheels Direct have OEM sets at better prices than BMW outlets.

Some insurance companies are not good with aftermarket options, but OEM will be 'no cost' insurance option.

New member here, I don't have any pictures of what my Winter Wheels look like as I only ordered my F30 on Saturday and not due till Middle of December so the dealer will prep it with its Winter Wheels on and put the Standards in Storage until after the winter period.

I am getting the Standard 16inch Steel Wheels with Covers and Continental Winter Contact TS830P Tyres at £872.00 for the complete set. I thought about alloys but I'd be gutted if I damaged them where as I wouldnt been bothered too much If I scratched the covers

Specialist Cars in Luton will Store Both Sets and Fit when required for £100 a year and rather than being stored by BMW UK they are stored locally at the dealer.

16" wheels will look crap on your car. I have 18" winters they look good. I do not tend to damage wheels on my cars.

That's your opinion, however I do not have the money to spend on the alloys and tyres, I had to take everything into consideration and would rather know that when the weather is bad I can get from point a to point b safely.
