lawyers needed
how is it possible for a car company to not allow anyone other than a bmw tech to work on there cars? i am a mechanic and drive an 08 1 series. eveytime i due work on the car i have to take it in to get it coded.. oil change, brakes, new battery. shouldnt this be free. is this not illegal.. i can freely buy a car at any store i want. why cant i due my own maintenance? iam more than qualified and capable of doing this simple regular maintancence. it like the dealership telling us if we add an aftermarket deck to our cars it will void the warranty... they tried to due that and they got sued and lost.. maybe we can start a class action lawsuit against bmw for monoplolizing there mechanical maintenance.

You can do your own maintenance. Nothing is keeping you from that. You just can't reset the service counters without the proper tools. And if you want waranty, you have to stick to the manufacturers conditions. Most free shops should have the tools to reset the counters.

Maybe you do some high tech googling and realize that you can indeed reset the service indicators yourself. Or you could just buy a coding tool. Lawyers are not needed because you're inconvenienced.

What they said. Just learn how to reset the service indicators; it's not difficult.
Also, due is not a verb; it's an adjective. Correct usage: I do my own maintenance. My taxes are due tomorrow. See the difference? |

You can do your own coding with a $25 cable. This forum has a very detailed thread on coding.

As a lawyer, I feel compelled to say that in exchange for the lion's share of the settlement, I'm happy to lead the charge! I'll wind up with a stable of R8s; you'll be lucky to get a coupon for a discounted oil change. Assuming we are successful, of course.
![]() Unfortunately, and in all seriousness, a class action requires a pretty large number of potential plaintiffs. I kind of doubt that there are enough people suffering the indignity of doing their own oil changes and then having to get their local BMW dealer to recode the car to form a potential class. From what others are saying, you are probably better off buying the cables/tools/gizmos necessary to recode it yourself. |

read up on the right to repair law which is gonna be voted on in massachusetts in november, and possibly set a precedent for a federal law.
i'm trying to post the autoblog article i read a few days ago but cant find it. anyway, it'll basically allow you to do everything youre asking for. edit: this is an older article about it. http://www.autoblog.com/2012/07/11/r...are-data-with/ the story i read a few days ago must have been from another source. |
