6-MT, Adaptive Suspension
Gerbs,
could you please write some more words about the 6MT? In one of the other threads you noted that it is quite delicate. I know that you're a fan of the manual transmission, but is it how you expected it to be? Does it satisfy your needs and is it quite easy to get your bimmer started quickly (and not be completely outrun by those 8-speed sport automatic guys)? It may sound weird but here in Munich (!) there seems to be no manual tranny available for test driving... Also, you said that the adaptive suspension in comfort mode is very comfortable. What are your impressions concerning the sport mode? Do you think it is as sporty as the classical (i.e. passive) M-sport suspension? Thanks Kyle |

I too would like to hear from manual tranny. Same problem here in Finland, can't find one for a test drive. As automatic boxes have gotten better, many are regarding manual as inferior and unnecessary, archaic even. Not me.

Looks beautiful!
Is it just me though, or is the M Sport rear bumper way too boxy looking? Think I'm going to swap it for a regular Sport Line rear bumper painted EB II when I get mine.

Loving your pics gerbs. The F10 M5 reps look sweet with EBII.
Congrats on finally getting your ride. Gerbs has the same wheels as I do, the specs are below: 8.5 x 19 Front ET 35 9.5 x 19 Rear ET 38 Not sure what size tires he's got on them though. ![]()

Also, looks as though there's a lot more sidewall for 19's - hence why I'm asking what ratio tire he had on. WOuld be great if Gerbs could respond to these questions ...

Obviously I can't compare side-by-side but based on their performance so far I know I made the right choice.

Regarding the 6MT, It is definitely not archaic. It is very similar to the E92 transmission (may be the same one?). The gears are definitely closer together from a shifting standpoint - and by using the term notchy I mean you can really "feel" the gear reach it's way into place. Half of that feeling is probably due to it being brand new and will become more smooth with time.
The ratios are very well calculated as well - I actually have a first gear again! At least compared to the M3 I would only use first to get the car rolling from 0-3mph then get to second. In the 335i you actually need first for the first 7-10mph and you can comfortably shift out from 20mph if you need some pull asap. The shifts are fast and the clutch is quite nice. I did the CDV delete (clutch delay valve) on my E92 335i and the 6MT F30 335i feels similar to a CDV-deleted E92 335i. I am not sure if this model even has a CDV; if it does, no one has been able to find it yet (including Zeckhausen racing, the guys that have been helping enthusiasts get rid of their CDV for a decade.) I would say the pairing between this N55 and the 6MT is a very balanced equation. It truly is very similar to the previous 335i but with a bit more "precision." The turbo lag from the N54 has vanished and is now replaced with a low-end push from the rear that feels very linear and smooth straight away. As a heads up; like many of you, I also could not find a 6MT 335i to test drive, so I went into this completely blind with only my past experience. Very glad and happy with my decision, I would have been bored and quite disappointed having it any other way

Just drop a 328 msport 6spd at the dealer today. I was impressed with how it felt. I have never owned a manual car, but it felt nice and definitely more engaging. Still going with the ZF8 but the manual is nice.

Gerbs, you have excellent taste. I've recently decided on a 335i M Sport, but agonized about the wheels. Today I phoned **********s and inquired about (what I believe) are your replica wheels. I was happy to be told they would fit no problem.
I googled BMW 335M wheels on a F30 and found your pictures. Very helpful. Your rig looks great. My question, did you drop your car? The wheels and tires fit absolutely perfectly. |
