N20 0-60 and 1/4 mile VBOX performance testing!

Hey guys,

This was posted in another thread but really belongs here. Just some quick testing to show you guys what potential the N20 motor has. This was done using a 100% stock 2012 F30 328i sedan on 93 octane fuel. First some stock runs then some tuned runs minutes later on the same road using the BMS N20 Stage1 tuning system. Pretty amazing results tune only. And I heard they just installed and dynod the car with the ER downpipe. Will post those results as soon as I get the OK. The 4-banger will be in the 12s before we know it!

Isn't BMS selling a beta tune already with this figure?

Mike, is that an auto or MT?

What kind of boost increase over stock?
Stock boost is pretty high to begin with.

Can we see dyno with just the tune?
Downpipe will be nice, but I'd like to see just tune, then DP to see what is going on.

It's an auto, and the Stage1 tuning runs anywhere from 1-4psi over stock depending on the RPM.

Are you doing any data logging while driving under normal conditions? Can you post knock counts please, both stock and with your tune? How about waste gate and injector duty cycles?

Your post describes this as a "tune." Is it an ECU flash or a piggyback of some sort?

Sorry, I don't do the tune development and don't have any data to share with you. This is not an ECU flash but a piggyback system.

Woah woah woah, hold on! Is that 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds, stock?!
And 4.9s tuned?! :
Flappy paddles or DS?
Do the paddles make it shift faster or have I heard wrong? Does D and DS shift just as fast?

I hear you! May I please impose on you to discuss my questions with the person doing the development and get back to me?

As I consider which tune to put on my car, if any, I will want to know how safe it is. To me as a consumer (whether I am right or wrong) knock counts and duty cycles tell me how close to the edge of safety a tune is. After all it is ultimately my checkbook that would suffer the consequences of a bad tune, right?

Are there even any options out there yet? The burger is beta and not for sale...and I don't want to spend $2000.

I have no control over what data is released and when. But there is no harm in waiting on the sidelines until it's used widely enough to give you a comfort level.

In my opinion waiting to see other people not having problems, and basing a purchasing decision on that data element alone, is making a buying decision based solely on internet wisdom. Generally speaking that is not my buying approach. To me, the absence of reported problems is NOT the same thing as a product being safe.

Hopefully somebody will install this product, connect the car to some monitoring equipment on a dyno, and report their findings. I understand your need to maintain a competitive advantage since you are likely one of the first to market a product for the N20.

What is BMS return policy?

Do whatever works best for you. I don't expect they will be releasing the kind of detailed information you're looking for any time soon though. The data is hard to get on your own as BMWs require special logging equipment like a BT cable, only the BT cable does not support this platform yet and may not for months to come or longer. And then the data coming from the ECU isn't correct anyway as the piggyback alters what the DME is receiving. When CAN access is added to the tune it's fairly easy to get tuning data. For example the JB4 lets you view timing advance / knock, boost, afr, all right in dash as you go, in addition to detailed logging with a laptop.

They also have a 14 day return period on tunes.

Is this tune more the equivalent of a JB2 or a JB+ in terms of how it works and how it's installed.

It's based on the JB3 hardware, similar to the N55 Stage1 tuning. Which BTW remains the only tuning available for the F10 535, X3, and X5 N55 platforms despite them having been out almost two years.

Can you post a dyno showing AFR's and boost pressure under high load conditions? For example, 2,500 RPM with 85% throttle? That would be very helpful!

How does the tune affect fuel economy?

No change during normal driving. The tune even recognizes the "economy" mode and disables itself when selected.
