random customer service gripe - am i wrong?

so i recently had a dozen t-shirts made up at a local t-shirt establishment. upon picking up the shirts yesterday, i failed to inspect them close enough to realize that they did not come out as i envisioned. when i got home, i realized how disappointed i was with the finished product, but by then said establishment was closed. in a nutshell, the image on the front of the shirt was way too big. i wanted it softball size, and it ended up being volleyball size.

so i call the business today, and explain my dissatisfaction. i also ask if there's anything they can do (i.e. give me a deal on another batch). they simply said no, because i did not specify that i wanted the image to be the same size as the image that i gave them. they said that as a result, they simply did a standard-sized image.

a buddy "designed" it and printed it off for me in color in the exact size that i wanted it. i assumed that they would just make it the same size. however, my main gripe is that they didn't bother to ask what size i wanted the image to be, nor did they provide a proof for me to look at before they went ahead and made the shirts.

so basically i flushed $170 down the toilet, as the shirts are worthless to me as i will never wear it in it's current form. i'm certain that everyone else that i made the shirts for will have the same opinion. i know it's "only" $170 but i am torn up about it because of the business' indifference to the situation. is this all on me, or do you think (as i do) that the business has some sort of responsibility here?

You've just learned one of life's lessons. Your requirements were not conveyed to the manufacturer. Suck up the $170 loss and move on.

Here my thought, did you give them a image as a soft copy, if so was the design size set in the actually image file. If you handed them and image file and did not tell them to scale it then this could be your issue. Just because you handed them a print they will usual follow the image file.

Grant it, most places would agree to work some sort of deal for mistake like this.

Most time when you do things like this you need to ask for a test sample to approved it before they go off an make the entire batch.

This is another example of lessons learn.

You could have made an at home prototype to show them or specified the image size. Lack of communication. $170 is not the end of the world.

Yes, this is common practice with screen printing business. You have to specify every little detail, BEFORE they start printing. Be grateful it wasn't a more expensive lesson.

I've had numerous shirts made....and one of the first details worked out between myself and the shop is the size and placement of the design/logo/etc. So, as previously mentioned....lessons learned.

Enough blame to go around. You should have specified exactly what you wanted the shirt to look like. This is standard operating procedure for printing T-shirts or getting anything custom manufactured.

However, they should have realized they did not have full specs on what you wanted and asked you about it before making them. So they do at least share some of the blame. They are under no obligation of providing you with a proof copy unless you specifically ask for and pay for it.
